You can use anything written in narrative style as a model for narrative writing, but the general formatting rules are as follows.
Use short paragraphs, starting a new paragraph when:
A different character is about to speak
The focus shifts to a different character
Characters move to a new location
There is any transition, shift, or change in topic
Use a comma between the quote and the speaker’s name (regardless of order).
“I don't like you going,” she told her.
She told her, “I don’t like you going.”
“I don't like you going,” she told her, “because it's a rich people’s party.”
Use a period between a character’s sentences.
She told her, “I don’t like you going.”
“I don't like you going,” she told her. “It's a rich people’s party.”
Avoid comma splices.
Wrong: She looked back at me carefully, “Can I trust you?”
Right: She looked back at me carefully. “Can I trust you?”
Show and describe everything that happens. Use imagery (sensory details) to describe the scene. Use dialogue to show interactions between characters.
