Respite care is the planned or unplanned provision of intermittent and temporary substitute care of supervision of a child with special needs on behalf of and in the absence of the primary caregiver for the purpose of providing temporary relief from the stress and responsibilities of providing constant care, to enable the caregiver to continue the provision of care within the home.

To make it easier to access respite services for caregivers, IRC has a new, statewide respite toll-free line to provide statewide information and referrals for respite across the state, and lifespan. The toll-free line can be reached at 866-ILL-RESP (866-455-7377). To reach the Statewide Coordinator, extension 101, for Spanish, extension 103.
The Mission of the National Respite Coalition is to secure quality, accessible, planned and crisis respite services for all families and caregivers in need of such services in order to strengthen and stabilize families, and enhance child and adult safety.
