Introduced Lesson 3 Reading Notes Activity...groups received a packet of possible homes, clothing, and miscellaneous artifacts that they will work to match to each cultural region we read about...completed Section 2 Reading Notes in ISN as a whole group to model how it is done...groups read the FIRST TWO paragraphs of the section in textbook, then label the corresponding region on the map in ISN, then color the region's resources, then fill in the TRIBES living in the cultural region...they work with their group to figure out what shelter, clothing, and miscellaneous artifact from the packet would've been used by a tribe in that region...they write down their answers for each and explain the resources used to make the items and how it would be useful in their region...will spend several days reading and collecting this information

Read Lesson 2 Reading Further on pgs 30-33 of textbook together to learn about how the Lakota tribe in the Great Plains uses Winter Counts to write down their history...then students completed Read & Do assignment on page 15 of ISN, creating their own Winter Count by drawing pictographs representing five events from their lives that were influenced by their natural surroundings
Continued working on Lesson 2 Study Guide...this study guide is fill-in-the-blank...not only will it help students study for the Lesson 2 Quiz, but they will be able to have it out during the quiz as well...Lesson 2 Quiz will be this Thursday

Introduced and completed Inuit Interview Activity...student pairs made a group with two other pairs to complete an activity where they ask interview questions, then answer the questions as a child, mother, or father belonging to the Inuit tribe...wrote down answers to the questions on a handout received in class...this handout can be used on the quiz

Completed Lesson 2 Preview Activity...students discussed experiences with moving...they were told to "resettle" in an area of the room they would be most comfortable working...completed Preview Activity in ISN, describing the area they settled, explaining their reasoning for settling there, describing changes that would make their area more comfortable, then drew what their area looks like before and after adding their comfort items...shared ideas...connected this to how the earliest people on our continent adapted to their environment

Went over Lesson 1 Test Corrections...these are optional, but students earn HALF CREDIT back for each question they accurately/completely correct...to do so, students fill out a page of the Google Form on Schoology for each question they want to correct...they MUST have their textbook to make corrections so that they can state the page number and paragraph number where they could find the information to get the correct answer...after they submit their Google Form, they must turn in the paper copy of their test to my Notes Bin so that I know they made corrections...they SHOULD NOT write on their paper test

Started Patriot Day Activity...started by discussing the difference between "celebrating" and "observing" with certain holidays...discussed what we already know about the September 11th terrorist attacks...introduced firsthand vs secondhand accounts and author's purpose...introduced activity and how it would involve them working with a group to examine six different accounts of the same events dealing with "the man in the red bandana" story...watched the ESPN Man in the Red Bandana version of the story and begain analyzing it...will complete group component tomorrow

Completed Lesson 1 Preview Activity...each lesson this year will begin with a preview activity that helps connect something students are familiar with to what we will be studying in the lesson...for this lesson's preview, we discussed using relative location vs exact location...students completed page 1 of their ISN by trying to accurately recreate a map of the classroom shown on the screen...showed a few examples and discussed how accurate their maps were as well as what they used to help them be accurate...repeated the activity, but this time the map had gridlines placed over it...students recreated the map using the gridlines and we discussed how their accuracy went up...concluded by talking about how modern maps use a grid system to help maps be more accurate
Began Reading Lesson 1 Introduction...discussed why introductions are important as well as their purpose...started reading the introduction in their textbooks to help prepare them for reading the rest of the lesson

Watched CNN 10 and participated in N.E.S.W. current event activity...to help students be responsible citizens, they need to practice making informed decisions...after watching a CNN 10 story about winning a mega lottery jackpot, students had to make an informed decision about what type of payout they would take (lump sum or annuity payments)...students met with other students who made the same decision, discussing reasons and evidence that supports their decision
Continued working on the Textbook Scavenger Hunt in order to better understand how the textbook is organized...will have some time in class tomorrow, but due Friday
