At Broadfield Primary Academy, we follow the Mathematics Mastery Programme to support every child’s learning. Throughout their time at BPA, children become confident mathematicians who can solve a variety of problems. This is achieved through the Mathematics Mastery Dimension of Depth: using mathematical language and communication, conceptual understanding, and mathematical thinking. Our mathematics curriculum aligns with the National Curriculum and has been designed by Mathematics Mastery to ensure coherent, sequentially planned learning built on solid foundations and is challenging for all pupils. We have chosen to follow this programme as, like all at BPA, Mathematics Mastery believes in a curriculum for all, there is a strong theme of mathematical application and everyone can achieve.
Our Mathematics curriculum follows the Mathematics Mastery programme of study. This is designed to provide all children with the full coverage of the National Curriculum in a sequential manner. Within each aspect of the curriculum, there are further unit narratives, which give teachers the knowledge, skills and representations that will provide children with a well-rounded understanding of mathematical concepts, that builds year after year.
Each lesson follows a six-part structure which implements the pedagogic principles of the curriculum. Having a consistent lesson structure across the school, ensures that learners are exposed to the pedagogies associated with each dimension and assessment opportunities are embedded within each part. Our pedagogical model allows for prior knowledge to be assessed at the beginning of every lesson via Do Now starters and Pre-Unit quizzes allow for gaps to be identified and filled before units are taught.
Our curriculum promotes pupils to become deep thinking mathematicians who can solve problems in a variety of ways. Planning and book monitoring identify a clear and concise structure being delivered across the school and challenge being in place for all. Lesson observations note high levels of pupil talk, mathematical language being embedded and pupil voice has shown that enthusiasm for mathematics is strong at BPA. Our pedagogical model ensures that children are able to recall and retain core knowledge and concepts from across the curriculum and this is evident in NTS test results and pre/post unit assessments. This model ensures children have secured the knowledge they need by the end of their Primary education and prepares them for the next steps in their mathematical journey.
