We deliver daily, 60 minute maths lessons 5 x a week in Yr 1-6
To provide an engaging, exciting and inclusive curriculum designed to meet the needs of all learners
To place an emphasis on mathematical problem solving through language and communication, conceptual understanding and mathematical thinking
We promote a deeper understanding through representing concepts using concrete, pictorial and abstract (words and symbols) strategies; leading to connections being made through these representations
We deliver a minimum of 3 maths meetings a week designed to halt the forgetting curve, consolidate prior learning and support the development of fluency
There is a times table focus with an aim to make all children experts in times tables by the end of Year 4.
Times Table Rockstars - used in Year 2-6 to practice multiplication and divsion facts
Numbots - used in Year 1-2 and the end of EYFS to support number fluency
Mathletics - used in Years 2-6 to support their understanding of mathematical concepts
We use the Maths Mastery programme by Ark Curriculum+
Maths Mastery is a fully resourced, sequenced and cumulative curriculum
It enables teachers to focus their attention on engaging children with the learning and adapting the learning to meet the needs of the children
Alongside unit plans, teachers also use: scheme of work (planning guides), progression in written calculation, key representations, evidence from pre-unit quizzes, daily formative assessment, NTS data and past SATs paper.
Year EYFS -6
1 hour maths lessons (different for EYFS)
Do now tasks - lesson starters linking to prior learning
New learning - modelled examples of the new concept
Talk task - applying star words and using full sentences to support understanding of the new concept
Develop learning - diving deeper into the concept and enhancing understanding
Indpendent learning
Plenary
Afternoon - Maths meetings and interventions
Teachers refer to the Unit Tutorials and Unit Narratives to reference prior knowledge needed.
Pre-Unit diagnostic quizzes are used to inform planning, teaching and appropriate adaptations.
Children's work is marked - often live marked in lessons - and feedback is given both verbally and written. This reflects what the child can do, how they respond to learning, any support they require and next steps/challenges.
Formative assessments happen on a daily basis and inform the class teacher which children may need additional support in an intervention or highlights a topic to consolidate in a Maths Meeting
NTS assessment data - Year 1-5 complete termly tests to monitor progress and attainment and to identify 'gaps' in knowledge and understanding
EYFS complete statutory baseline assessments to inform starting points
Year 4 complete a Multiplication Tables Check of 25 questions
Year 6 will complete mock SATs throughout the year to monitor progress and attainment and to identify 'gaps' in knowledge and understanding.
Year 6 will complete statutory SATs tests in May
Teachers use formative and summative assessments to make informed termly judgements as part of Pupil Progress Meetings
Staff complete in school induction training when they join to develop understanding of the Maths Mastery approach
Maths Mastery external training days for new staff
Maths Lead 'locality hub'
Maths Lead external development days with TKAT and Maths Mastery
Maths Mastery PD videos to support with subject knowledge, teaching strategies and planning support
Unit narrative, plans, videos and additional resources for the maths curriculum
Focus areas for maths delivered through weekly Teaching on Toast sessions and incorporated through the TKAT Teaching cycle of CPD sessions
Regular learning walks and book monitoring to support staff with next steps in mathematics across the school
The framework has six main areas of study:
Number (including place value, addition, subtraction, fractions, decimals and percentages)
Ratio and Proportion (Year 6)
Algebra
Measurement
Geometry
Statistics
