Curriculum
1. Math - Taught by Mr. Olinger
A focus on in-depth understanding of concepts through the Eureka Math Curriculum. Concepts include: place value, application of all operations to decimals and fractions, geometric 2-D and 3-D figures, area and volume, coordinate grids, line plots, pre-algebra equations with at least 1 unknown/variable, measurement using standard and metric systems, and problem solving.
Math Workshop - Mini-lesson with direct instruction, followed by small group work in each of the following areas:
Practice Problems - This will give students the chance to practice problems involving the new concept that was introduced that day in the Eureka Math Curriculum.
Problem Solving - This will integrate all concepts into higher-level word problems which require the student to pull together multiple skills simultaneously in order to solve.
Technology - we will use Zearn and IXL to reinforce skills instructed in class and to catch students up to grade level expectations as well as provide enrichment opportunities to go far above grade level.
Homework - Unfinished classwork or when your child is absent from school.
Your child will have ONE Eureka Math problem set page and ONE Zearn lesson to complete almost EVERYDAY as we work through our daily lessons in the curriculum.
2. Reading - Taught by Miss Anderson
A focus on applying comprehension strategies to develop a deeper understanding of both fiction and nonfiction texts.
Reading Workshop - Mini-lesson with direct instruction on specific skill followed by small group and independent work. Students are expected to read to self, respond to reading, work on writing, participate in discussions with peers, etc., while working independently. During this time, students will also be pulled for small group instruction with Mrs. Carmichael.
Greek & Latin Roots - Vocabulary words will be presented to students during whole group instruction. Each unit will take place over a two week period. Students will work with the patterns during small group and independent work times.
3. Writing - Taught by Miss Anderson
A focus on applying the Writing Process to create personal narratives, fictional narratives, opinion, and informational pieces.
Writing Workshop - Mini-lesson with direct instruction followed by small groups and independent work. Students are expected to work on their independent pieces while their teacher confers with students or works with small groups.
Grammar & Vocabulary - These two items are integrated into the reading and writing workshops. Students will receive direct instruction in grammar concepts. Vocabulary will be both directly taught and self guided through the use of an interactive notebook.
4. Science and Social Studies - Taught by Mr. Olinger
Social Studies involves a focus on US History from early colonization to the Revolutionary War. In order to prepare 5th graders for their field trip, social studies instruction also includes a study of the Constitution and the structure of our state and federal government branches. Science involves hands-on science units from Mystery Science that are aligned with the NGSS. They focus on: The Water Cycle & Earth's Systems, Earth & Space Patterns, Stars & Planets, Ecosystems & The Food Web, Chemical Reactions & Properties of Matter.
Homework
Please check my WEBSITE daily to see assignments and announcements. You may also check the Weekly Lessons Tab above and our google classroom for specific details and daily work. Classwork that is NOT FINISHED in school needs to be completed at home.
Snack/Water
Olinger Homeroom Students are welcome to bring in a small, healthy snack to eat during arrival and dismissal. Water bottles are acceptable; however, please limit the drink selection to water only.
Anderson Homeroom Students are welcome to bring in a small healthy snack to eat in my classroom between 1:30 and 1:45 pm daily.
All students should bring in a water bottle to use daily during school. Research shows that all people should be drinking at least 1/2 their body weight in water everyday. (ex. 100 pound student = 50 oz of water everyday)
Absences/Transportation
Please be sure to contact the office if your child will be absent from school. Any change in dismissal procedures must be communicated with the office prior to dismissal.
Birthdays - Feel free to send in a packaged item to celebrate your child's birthday this year.
We enjoy celebrating birthdays with your child. If you choose to send in a birthday treat, please remember to check with your homeroom teacher about the current number of students in your child’s class. Please make sure all treats are NUT FREE, and easily served in the cafeteria.
Field Trips - Our Team has not decided yet where we will be going this year.
Our field trip with the students will be determined in the near future. More information will follow; however, keep in mind that in order to attend the trip with your child, your clearances must be current and on file in the office.
*Please remember, we are here to ensure your child has a successful year in fifth grade. Feel free to contact us with any information that might assist us. We are looking forward to another great year!
