Our library is a vibrant place where students can explore, discover, and imagine. We love fostering a love of learning and reading. We strive to provide students with opportunities and strategies to practice finding books that are the perfect fit for them. It is truly rewarding to see the joy that comes when a student is excited about checking out a book. Please check out the information below to learn more about our library schedule and book exchange routines and procedures.
Book exchange time is a special time in the library when we can assist your child in finding books that they are excited to bring home to read to or with you. There are three things we would like you to know about our library routines each week:
Students who forget a library book are invited to borrow one book while we assist them in locating their missing book. Students who forgot all of their books often wait until they can bring them back to check out new books.
We have a "holding station" in the library for students who would like us to reserve books for them until they can bring their forgotten books another day.
We may send a reminder notice home (either print or email) if your child forgot books on library day. This notice serves as a courtesy reminder to help you look for the books at home while we help look at school.
Please see the grade levels below to learn about how we help students in each grade level select library books each week.
Checks out 2 books each cycle.
We love connecting our youngest readers with books that are fun and will help them grow as readers. We work on teaching parts of a book and the "just right" sections of the library for their grade. These students practice a "peek and pick" method to find books to borrow. They may peek at the book before choosing to borrow. We also daily rotate books on display for our little readers to preview a book before selecting it to borrow.
Checks out 3 books each cycle.
Our second grade readers often enjoy picking books of interest to read to or with you. We work on teaching them the sections of the library that are just right for second graders. We also talk about authors, illustrators, and book awards of interest for second grade students. We practice strategies for taking the book off of the shelf during book selection time. This allows them to read some of the text and determine if it is a "good fit" book.
Checks out 3 book each cycle.
Our students in intermediate grades are ready to explore the whole library. They often know what topics and/or authors they love. We practice various searches in our Destiny Library catalog and learn more about how to find books throughout the library. Students are encouraged to preview the text of a book while they browse. They might also love checking out displays in the library to try something new and/or popular.
