Bourne High School has constructed a series of Learning Labs designed to provide students with dynamic, authentic environments in which to explore, create, engage, and innovate. Each lab supports our current and projected Innovation Career Pathways and aligns directly with career fields students may pursue after high school.
ANATOMY LAB: Through grant funding, BHS has acquired virtual dissection tables that provide students in healthcare and science classes with an interactive 3D anatomy and physiology learning experience. These state-of-the-art tables distinguish our program, as few high schools have access to this level of technology. This resource is essential for exposing students to real-world, authentic learning as they explore careers in healthcare.
ANATOMY STATIONS: A more mobile version of the Anatomage tables, these tablets place learning directly into the hands of students. They offer instant access to digitized human cadavers, anatomy videos, and pathology references. Their versatility makes them a powerful tool for classroom discourse, deeper inquiry, and hands-on, authentic exploration.
BUSINESS SUITE AND CLIENT CENTER: This space houses our award-winning DECA program, where students build skills in business, leadership, and essential 21st-century competencies such as problem-solving, communication, and teamwork. Students engage in activities across marketing, finance, hospitality, and management.
The Business Suite also serves as our Finance Lab, complete with a stock market ticker to support students exploring careers in finance. The attached Client Center provides a professional environment for brainstorming, planning, design, and customer service. Students collaborate on projects and meet with school and community clients to gain real-world experience.
CYBERSECURITY LAB: Computer science drives the development of new technologies and systems, while cybersecurity ensures that those systems, and the data within them, remain protected. Our Cybersecurity Lab provides students with an innovative learning environment that mirrors real-world settings and allows them to explore computer science and cybersecurity career pathways.
GRAPHICS LAB AND PRINT CENTER: Located in the Innovation Studio, this lab supports our Design and Communications pathway through graphic arts, cinematography, and digital media production. Students have access to industry-standard tools, including large-format printers, a CNC machine, and a laser cutter, to design and produce professional-quality branding and marketing materials. This creative workspace allows students to collaborate, develop technical skills, and work with real clients on authentic projects.
MEDICAL CENTER: Our Medical Center includes an ambulance simulator, patient-care manikins, and new first aid, medical, and CPR equipment. We offer a variety of courses and certifications connected to healthcare and public safety careers. Partnerships with local organizations, including the Bourne Fire Department, Bourne Police Department, and Cape Cod Healthcare, allow students to participate in field trips, workshops, and presentations that connect classroom learning to real-world practice. All students in grade 11 earn their First Aid/CPR certification.
SUSTAINABILITY LAB: Our Sustainability Lab includes both an Aquaponics Lab and a student-maintained vegetable garden, providing hands-on opportunities to explore sustainable food systems. The aquaponics system mimics a natural ecosystem by combining aquaculture and hydroponics, while the garden allows students to apply agricultural skills in a real outdoor environment. Students also benefit from connections with industry experts at WHOI and MBL and participate in workshops, field trips, and mentorship experiences that deepen their understanding of environmental sustainability.
