Grade 2

Byenveni

Bienvenidos

Welcome

This week we are continuing to learn about The Power of Pollination.

We know there are lots of pollinators, and lots of plants that need to be pollinated. For the next two weeks we will be asking,

What makes a plant and a pollinator a good match?

Suggested Daily Schedule

Read Alouds

On each day, listen to and read a text.

Read the questions next to each Read Aloud, and then talk with a family member and draw and write your ideas on a piece of paper or in a notebook.

Insect Pollinators

These slides tell about five different kinds of insect pollinators.

Insect Pollinator slides with full text

Talk, Draw, and Write 1:

How do ants help pollination? Use details from the text to support your idea.

What attracts wasps to certain kinds of orchids?

How does a moth’s body structure help it pollinate?

Why does the author think that moths are excellent pollinators? Use details from the text to support your idea.

Talk, Draw, and Write 2:

How do beetles help pollination?

Examine the photographs of the beatles. How are their bodies similar? How are they different?

Why are some insects better pollinators than others?

Wasp Poem

Wasps slides

Talk, Draw, and Write:

What did the poet learn about wasps by observing them?

How did the poet’s feelings about wasps change in the poem?

Compare the poem to the informational text from the slides.

How is the information about wasps in the informational text similar to the information in the poem?

What new information does the informational text provide?

Animal Pollinators

by Jennifer Boothroyd
W4 Animal Pollinators

Read along with the text!

Talk, Draw, and Write:

What information do the words in the text teach you about bats?

Look at the photographs of the bats. What new information do the photos teach you about how bats help pollination?

How can humans be pollinators? Use the photographs and the words to support your response.

Which insect or animal pollinator from this week’s readings did you find the most interesting? Why?

Take some quiet time each day.

During this time, you might read, draw, snuggle a stuffed animal, watch a favorite show, do some quiet yoga, or just lie down and let your imagination take over. Listen to some quiet music or to a podcast (Wow in the World! for science; Stories Podcast or Circle Round for stories). Close your eyes and listen to a story.

Puedes escuchar música tranquila o un podcast: (Wow in the World! es sobre ciencias; Stories Podcast or Circle Round para cuentos).

Playing On and Off the Screen/ Jugamos con y sin pantallas

These activities address the Massachusetts Math Standards: 2.NBT B5 and B7, 2.OA C4

This week children will continue to practice adding and subtracting with fluency within 100 and beyond as they play Get to 0, Make a Dollar, and Capture 5 with game boards up to 800. Those games will also support their developing understanding of place value. They will have an activity to develop the foundation for multiplication as they work with arrays. Enjoy!

Menu for the Week

Click on each activity.

Tuesday: Quick images with stickers and Make a Dollar (online) or Make a Dollar (video)

Wednesday: How Many Arrays Can You Make? and Get to 0 (online) or Get to 0 (video)

Thursday: Capture 5 (additional game boards) and Get to 0 (online) or Get to 0 (video)

Friday: Choose activities from Number games or from any off-screen games.

¡Disfruten!

Storytelling and Story Acting

Think of an animal that pollinates. It might be an insect or another animal. Tell a story of the animal’s day, from morning to night.

Can you and your family act it out?
