In this unit, students deepen their understanding of ratios, scale factors, unit rates (also called constants of proportionality), and proportional relationships, using them to solve multi-step problems that are set in a wide variety of real-world contexts that involve fractions and percentages such as commission, tip, interest, tax, price markups, and discounts.

By the end of this unit, students will learn how to:

Use long division to write fractions as repeating and terminating decimals.
Write numbers in percentage, decimal, and fractional form.
Understand how to use scale factors, unit rates, and the constant of proportionality to solve proportion problems.
Solve percent increase and percent decrease problems.
Find percentages and percent rates and write equations to solve problems involving sales tax, tip, discount, price markups, commission, and interest.
Calculate percent error

Project and Task Examples:

How much does a car depreciate in value? The value of a new car decreases by about 15% in the first year. How much will a car be worth after one year if its initial value was $1,000? $5,000? $5,020? x dollars?
How does sales tax differ from city to city? How much more will I have to pay on items with higher sales tax?
What percentage of sales tax did I pay on my bill? If I want to tip 20%, how much do I owe for tip? What if I am splitting the bill among friends?

Common Core Standards Addressed in Unit

7.RP.A.1 Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in like or different units. For example, if a person walks 1/2 mile in each 1/4 hour, compute the unit rate as the complex fraction 1/21/4 miles per hour, equivalently 2 miles per hour.
7.RP.A.2 Recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities.
7.RP.A.3 Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems. Examples: simple interest, tax, markups and markdowns, gratuities and commissions, fees, percent increase and decrease, percent error.
7.NS.A.2.d- Convert a rational number to a decimal using long division; know that the decimal form of a rational number terminates in 0s or eventually repeats.
