Dear K0/K1 Families,
I would like to welcome you to the John D. Philbrick School for the 2021-2022 year. I know that you have many questions about the upcoming school year. Please know that I am available to talk to you personally over the phone, zoom, email, Talking Points, and SeeSaw. Attached, you will find some answers to commonly asked questions about the K0/K1 school year.
Change of Clothing
Please be sure to send in 1 complete extra change of clothing with your child on the first day of school. Please send in 1 pair of pants, 1 pair of underwear, 1 pair of socks , 2 face masks, and 1 shirt. This extra change of clothes does not need to be the school uniform. If your child has an accident and does not have a change of clothes you will be called to come get your child. Kindergarten can be messy! Even if your child does not usually have accidents, we ask that all children have a change of clothing. Please label all clothing items. Place the change of clothes in a large gallon size ziplock bag labeled with your child’s first and last name.
Snack Time
Your child will eat lunch and snack here at school. Snack will be provided by YOU! The busy school day makes children very hungry. Having an extra snack helps to keep them focused and energized! Please send in a healthy snack and small drink each day in a reusable lunch box labeled with your child’s first and last name. If your child has any food allergies, please let us know.
Students Rest
We have a daily rest time of one hour. We provide a mat for each child and ask that you send in a very small blanket. We will send these blankets home periodically to be washed and returned. Be sure to label your child’s blanket with his/her first and last name.
Curricula
In the Philbrick School K0/K1 classroom we teach a blended curriculum using the resources from both Literacy Collaborative and Focus on K1. The Focus on K1 curriculum covers social studies, art, science, reading and writing. It is based on six themes: Family, Friends, Wind and Water, The World of Color, Shadows and Reflections, and Things that Grow. The math curriculum we use is called Building Blocks. It focuses on number sense and geometry and introduces some measurement and patterning concepts. Children will participate in a variety of activities each day. Some of these activities include read alouds, center time, outdoor time, songs and poems, math work time and social skills lessons. These activities will be discussed more during the fall open house on Thursday, September 22nd. I hope all families can join!
Communication
For students: We will provide your child with a home to school folder. This folder must be kept in your child’s backpack and sent back and forth to school daily. If for any reason you may need to contact me do not hesitate. You can reach me by the options below:
SeeSaw - it is an application that we will use as a classroom. It includes messaging and it also allows me to share photos and videos of our learning.
TalkingPoints - It is a phone app that will translate my messages into the language used on your phone.
