I am fortunate to have collaborated with colleagues to write grants to fund our professional learning and project based learning for our students. With my co-teacher Allison Skerret, I co-wrote the chapter of her book Teaching Literacy in Troubled Times. Then we presented at the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). With others, we were able to bring 17 students to Washington, DC after securing a grant from Bank of America. Most recently, teachers and I collaborated to get funding to plan in August for interdisciplinary Project-Based Learning assignments and exhibitions.
For the past seven years, I have been privileged to work with Company One Theater’s visiting artists who co-teach with me one day each week. Students researched problems they care about in Boston as part of a PBL project that we called Our City. Then we invited city councilors to come talk to us about these concerns. Six councilors participated in our discussions.
My colleague Allison Skerrett and I presented our findings about literacy at the NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English) in 2024.
