Exploring Our Changing Planet in Humanities Classrooms:
Helping All Students Become Active and Engaged Citizens Through Effective Literacy Practices
Caitlin MacLeod-Bluver
NSTA 2018
My name is Caitlin MacLeod-Bluver and I teach high school history and English through the English for Speakers of Other Languages program at Boston International High School, a Boston public school. My students are all recent immigrants, hailing from nearly 20 countries and speaking over 12 languages. I use both fiction and nonfiction to study race and power, oppression and resistance, and membership and community. I hope to empower my students to use their voices to advocate for justice, and to recognize the interconnectedness between human action and our world. In 2017, I was a National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellow and traveled to Arctic Svalbard with National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions. To learn more about my trip, click here.
