EMK has been using a Web-based tool called NAVIANCE. The Naviance program maintains data on colleges all across the country and the world and is accessible (with an EMK approved registration code) from any computer with Web access. In addition, Naviance keeps track of recent EMK college applications, student statistics, and admissions decisions. Students and parents now have access to a wide range of college admissions information. Some of the features of Naviance are listed below.
ABOUT ME:
Here you can put together a resume that will be useful when filling out applications, working with teachers and counselors around recommendations and applying for a job.
CAREERS:
Under the CAREERS tab you will find two self-administered tests called Do What You Are (click on Personality Type) and Career Interest Profiler. These features are excellent tools for giving students some insight into their personality type and how their pattern of interests and personal characteristics mesh with different occupational categories.
COLLEGES:
This feature allows students to keep track of the colleges they are considering and create an active list as they decide where to apply. Click on Colleges at the top left, then Colleges I'm Thinking About. Click on College Research to see the many ways to can learn about schools.
College Search – Students can search for colleges based on numerous qualifications like location, size of student body, majors offered, cost, etc. Naviance includes information on over 6,000 colleges from all over the world in its database. Students have found the College Search feature easy to use and to yield quality results.
College Lookup – It’s easy to look up information on any college of interest to you. Students can find out admissions requirements, majors and activities offered, and statistics about the student body at the click of a button. It is easy to research colleges as current college contact information is readily available, including a direct link to the college homepage.
Scattergrams/Application History – Because we use Naviance to keep track of EMK student applications and admissions decisions, students can access statistics and graphs that represent EMK applicants to specific schools. These graphs show the SAT/ACT scores and GPAs of applicants (without names) and indicate whether the student was admitted waitlisted or denied. This data allows students to have an understanding of how their statistics match up to previous applicants. You are strongly encouraged to use this feature in conjunction with consultation with Mrs. Pettie-Simpkins and Ms. Girma to create a well-balanced college list.
BUILD A COLLEGE LIST:
This list will be changing frequently and that’s okay. This list is also going to be tailored to your individual grades, needs and financial decisions
RESOURCES:
Questions to ask yourself while searching for colleges:
- How far away do I want to be from home?
- What is my GPA/SAT scores? What is the average GPA/SAT scores of the schools I’m interested in?
- What do I want to be when I grow up? Which schools offer my major?
- Do I know anyone that has graduated from college? Do I know anyone currently in college? Ask for their opinions!! They are your biggest resource
- How much financial aid does this school cover? Does it meet 100% need?
- Do I want to be in a club/sport? Which schools over the extracurricular activities I want to be a part of?
- Do I want to study abroad or be a part of any internships? Which schools offer these opportunities?
- What am I looking for in terms of diversity?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tip: Make sure you have at least 2 safety schools, 2 match schools, 2 reach schools on your list
- Safety school: Your GPA/SAT scores is well above the average SAT/GPA scores that the school requires
- Match: Your GPA/SAT scores meets exactly what the average GPA/SAT of the school requires
- Reach: Your GPA/SAT scores is under the average GPA/SAT scores that the school requires
The Common Application (will be used when applying to colleges):
Many colleges now offer students the option of using the Common Application. It allows the student to complete one application online which then submits the same information to nearly 900 colleges. Some colleges may require additional information to the Common Application.
STEP #1 - For the Common Application website, go to www.commonapp.org
STEP #2 - What is the Common App and how to get started:
https://www.commonapp.org/apply/first-time-students
STEP #3 - **How to Match The Common Application to your Naviance Account**:
STEP #5 - For the Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) Common Application website
Go to: commonblackcollegeapp.com.
Students can apply to 50 HBCUs for one flat fee
See Mrs. Pettie-Simpkins for assistance in getting a fee waiver.
LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION:
STEP 1 - Complete the EMK Brag Sheet:
- Fill out your EMK brag sheet which is a document your teachers/counselor will use to create a detailed letter of recommendation for you. Your brag sheet is available for you to complete in Naviance under “Tasks assigned to me” - Video, how to access your EMK Brag Sheet https://youtu.be/T9yWN8eCf58
- Presentation with sentence starters for each EMK Brag Sheet Question: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1CMvbGh2qTXEEFtIJmJ-B9ISTnIpfBvZJk6QQRlupH0I/edit?usp=sharing
STEP 2 - Ask 2 teachers (in person) to write your Recommendation Letters:
- Request 2 letters of recommendation from your teachers
Tip: When you send requests to teachers/staff, you’ll want to sound professional and give them a good amount of time to write it. Do NOT ask teachers/staff to write you a recommendation letter a day or even a week before the deadline.
Example request: “Hi Ms. or Mr. ______, I hope you are doing well. I’m writing to ask if you would be able to write my letter of recommendation for college. I’m planning on applying by December 1st. I believe you are someone that can talk about my strong qualities as a person and a student. Thank you so much.”
When thinking of who you want to ask for a recommendation, you will want to ask at least 2 people. Both must be an EMK teacher and you can have a third one where you ask your BBBS mentor, a coach, etc. This person must be able to testify to your qualities as a person and scholar. Do not ask your family members. You also can’t ask Mrs. Pettie-Simpkins, Ms. Girma or Ms. Porydzy for a letter of recommendation because they will already be writing one for you.
STEP 3 - In Naviance - Go to "Colleges" then "Letters of Recommendations" then click "Add Request" add "Teacher" then "College(s)" and a note reminding them to write the letter they agreed to when you asked previously...see below:
Example request: “Hi Ms. or Mr. ______, I hope you are doing well. Thank you again for agreeing to write my letter of recommendation for college. I’m planning on applying by December 1st. I believe you are someone that can talk about my strong qualities as a person and a student. Again, thank you so much and have a great day.”
