The Ellis School Library is special because it is young and thriving! The David A. Ellis Elementary School was built in 1932 but this iteration of a fully staffed school library was built in just 2022.
The Ellis School Library thrives because of its community - let me count the ways: through close partnership with the Egleston Library around the corner where our students take field trips to visit with local Black authors or engage in Spanish-English bilingual storytelling programs. Through visits to our Ellis School Library from Ellis alumni like the renowned illustrator Ekua Holmes discussing her work with Coretta Scott King to make the book Coretta, or Hazel Agyemang, who shared a poem she wrote about Elma Lewis, the founder of our campus neighbor, the Museum of the National Center of Afro American Artists. Or finally, through our brilliant students who come by the library to check on the fish (RIP Stitch, the blue glofish) and check out a book. To the student who had never entered a library before and "didn't realize there would be THIS many books!," to the student who only speaks a few phrases of English so far but recognizes a book about Ramadan and hugs it saying "I love you," this library is special because of them!
Our dear Ellis Library got some special attention for National School Library Month 2023 - check it out here!
