The Student Success Team (SST) is here to support your well-being and success at BDEA. This team includes our Family Liaison, Community Field Coordinators (CFCs), health services staff, and partners from the Whittier Street Clinic. Every student is connected to two supportive adults—your CFC and your academic advisor—who work together to make sure you have both the academic and emotional support you need.
Family partnership is central to our student support model. Our Family Liaison fosters these connections by organizing parent meetings and events and by providing critical assistance and coordination during times of emergency.

BDEA is proud to have two dedicated school nurses—Andrea McFarlane at the Timilty Building and Solange Smith at the Wheatley Building. Nursing care and health partnerships with Whittier Street Health Center are coordinated by Latashia Furtado, Director of Student Success Services. If you have questions about nursing care, you can reach her at lfurtado@bostonpublicschools.org.
All students who are experiencing illness, injury or any health-related concerns should first see the school nurse during regular office hours
Students who require additional care will be referred the school-based health center or outside healthcare provider as needed
Students who are ill may be dismissed from school at the nurse's discretion; staff will be notified by a school nurse
Students requiring medication(s) and/or medical treatments during the school day will need to report to the school nurse
All students needing to see the school nurse must be sent to the health office with a hallway pass (students may be accompanied by a staff member)
Students who are referred to the nurse for “Well Check” should be accompanied by a staff member
In the event of a medical emergency, all staff must adhere to the medical emergency protocol
Per protocol, school nurses do not provide routine nursing care to school staff (this includes medication administration nor medical advice)
School nurses may choose to provide basic first aid to injured school staff as the need arises; school staff will be referred to the ER or to their primary medical provider
School staff who are experiencing illness or injury during school hours must report to their direct supervisor and follow up with their primary medical care provider

The entire BPS community works hard every day to ensure students accelerate their academic achievement, and the safety and well-being of our students is a top priority. Bullying affects a student’s ability to focus on learning and to succeed in the classroom and beyond. We are engaged in proactive, innovative, and educationally sound strategies to prevent bullying.
To help our efforts, we have established a Safe Space and Bullying Prevention Hotline: 617-592-2378 (call or text), staffed 24/7 by trained counselors.
While we strongly encourage you and your child to report instances of bullying to administrators and staff at school, we also understand that families, and students in particular, may feel more comfortable calling the hotline in some instances. While it is essential that all reported instances are treated with the utmost seriousness, we also believe that proactive measures are critical to prevention.
In addition to the hotline, the BPS leadership team has worked collaboratively with Safety Services, Cyber Safety Campaign, and Education Development Center to actively develop a variety of educational initiatives. These proactive activities include professional development for school personnel, workshops for parents, classroom and school-wide bullying prevention education, and resources for school personnel and parents.
