This week during our story labs we focused on character empathy and retelling stories. After reading stories such as When Sophie’s Feelings Are Really, Really Hurt and The Three Bears students shared with each other how the characters felt. We discussed different emotions (happy, scared, calm, mad, excited, sad, nervous and frustrated) and what makes us feel that way. Students had fun playing a feeling game where they chose a picture card with an emotion on it and made their faces match the emotion. Their peers had to guess what the emotion was. Students were then challenged to think of a scenario that would cause them to feel that way and tell the class. Students also retold the stories acting out the various parts using the emotions each character was feeling.
We have been very busy setting up our Town of Boonton! Since the last time you saw us, we have opened the Museum in Dramatic Play, Scoop House in Table Toys, the Salon in Art, John Hill School in Literacy, and most recently the Veterinarian in Science! Friends have been practicing the roles of Paleontologist, Server and Customer, Hair Stylist and Nail Technician, Teacher and Student, and Veterinarian and Pet Owner.
This week we read Pet Show by Ezra Jack Keats. We used our vocabulary story lab card and learned what the word independent means-to do something all by yourself. We have been practicing Take-Away Sounds during Opening Group. Take-Away Sounds is a Tools of the Mind activity where the teacher puts pictures representing words on the board and then prompts students to break the words into their initial sound (onset) and rime. Students identify the whole word, one part of the word, then identify the present or missing part of the word. Later, they invent new words by mixing the onset of one word with the rime of another!
