The Gem is an all-in-one low cost single-channel infrasound logging system that suitable for rapid and large-N deployments and requires minimal training. For analog-output infrasound solutions appropriate to cabled arrays of sensors consider the infraBSU sensor.
The Gem is an open-source integrated infrasound sensor-logger optimized for low cost, low power consumption, high portability, and ease of installation/concealment.
The per-sensor cost of the two systems is similar when you consider the data logger that must be used with the infraBSU, but they fill different roles. In short, the Gem is a self-contained sensor-logger intended for easy transport and deployment, whereas the infraBSU is a sensor intended to be connected to external geophysical loggers.
Consider the Gem if...
You need to transport and deploy many sensors with few workers
The field team has limited infrasound recording experience
You want to use just one or two sensors per site, or any sensor geometry other than small triangular arrays
You need instruments with a small footprint that are easy to conceal
You are recording from an aerial platform (e.g., drone or balloon) and need to minimize payload weight
Consider the infraBSU if...
You already have a data logging or telemetry system you want to use with your sensors
You are already setting up a high-effort station with centralized power
You need to study frequencies outside the Gem's passband (above 27 Hz)
