The task & goals

This is a Newton's 3rd Law question. Will students recognize that the force felt by each student is the same?

Student responses

The first student response has the forces unequal, not recognizing that the force that Carlos exerts on Devin must equal the force that Devin exerts on Carlos. They also assign the "stronger force" that Carlos exerts as a force that acts on Carlos.

This student essentially does what the first student does, but assigns the (inappropraitely-different) force correctly.

Thoughts

While there are a few things that could be confusing here, ultimately it's simply a 3rd law problem, and the job is to recognize that the force on Carlos is the same strength as the force on Devin. This makes the two student responses relatively redundant. Differences between them don't matter for the primary goal of the task.
