At Dallas Harris, we have several events and programs that support and build up our school community!
The Yote Way ... Respect, Dignity, Honesty, Responsibility, & Teamwork
At Dallas Harris, we use the Continuum of Engagement as a tool to help all of us, from kindergarten students to sixth graders to staff members, to reflect on our level of learning. Students learn what each stage of engagement looks like & sounds like in all learning settings. They also practice using the continuum to reflect on what level they are on and strategies to move up toward the right, which is higher engagement levels. We have seen tremendous amounts of growth as we all take ownership of our own learning and increase our responsibility and investment in learning new things. We see this as a lifelong tool that will help across multiple settings.
A school-wide resource that supports all students in building self-regulation and coping skills.
WHAT: This school-wide program is built on research from the work of Dan Segal (The Whole Brain Child). We use brain research about child development and neurodiversity to equip all students with an understanding of how the brain works, what dysregulation looks & feels like (when you flip your lid), and what you can do to help your brain return to calm when you feel upset or dysregulated. We teach kids how to use the tools in each regulation station and give them time to practice using them. Then, if a student is feeling dysregulated, he or she is able to ask for a brain break using a simple cue system. If the classroom teacher approves it for that moment, the student can independently access the classroom regulation station for 5 minutes. During this time, they can use the tools in the station to help regulate and calm their body and brain. When the timer shows that 5 minutes is up, they rejoin in learning, calm and ready to learn.
Thank you to our PTO who generously donated all of the items in our regulation stations in 2023! Because of you, we have regulation stations in all learning spaces!
Items in each Regulation Station:
Breathing ball
Stress ball
Thinking putty
Sequin pillow
Noise-cancelling headphones
Scented cotton balls to smell
Colored pencils and coloring paper
Small stuffed animal
5 minute timer
"Mindset Check" statements
Simple midline movement cards

Conflict Resolution - Kelso's Choice Wheel
Here at Dallas Harris we teach kids how to peacefully solve peer conflict. If someone is getting hurt or there is danger, a child should report this to an adult immediately. But, if there is no danger, we encourage kids to use Kelso's Choice Peace wheel to solve peer conflicts. This allows kids to practice problem-solving and utilize strategies that aid in helping to find a solution, and it builds kids' confidence in themselves as a problem-solver and friend! Learn more about Kelso's Choice here and encourage your child to use these strategies at home when they encounter conflict.

Yotes
Student Ambassadors
The YOTE Ambassador program provides an opportunity for sixth graders to demonstrate their understanding of the YOTE WAY and participate in school related activities that will help to enrich the Dallas Harris School Community. YOTE Ambassadors are visible role-models at school in important ways. They encourage positive peer relationships with students at all grade levels. They consistently exhibit the YOTE values of safety, respect, responsibility, and kindness at school. They participate in school community activities using their skills as communicators, problem solvers, and leaders to benefit everyone at Dallas Harris. Some YOTE Ambassadors’ duties include welcoming new students to Dallas Harris, taking leadership roles in various school-wide events, assisting school staff, and attending scheduled meetings to help plan and develop school activities. Student Ambassadors are identified based on completed student applications, teacher recommendations, and parent consent.
Ambassadors must meet the following requirements to participate:
maintain classroom teacher recommendation based on academic goals
consistent school attendance
positive behavior conduct in the classroom, specials, and at recess
showing kindness and a desire to help others
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Brooks (principal), Mrs. Stichka (counselor), Mrs. Dessert (PE teacher), or Mrs. Dennard (behavior support specialist).
Sources of Strength
The Boise School District uses Sources of Strength as part of the counselor curriculum in grades 3 through 6. Sources of Strength takes a strength-based, upstream approach to preventing negative outcomes while promoting well-being, help-seeking, resilience, healthy coping, and a sense of belonging.
