Art by an amazing former student, Megan Merhar!
Hi! I'm Mrs. Baker, and I'm the librarian at North Junior High.
I've been the librarian at North since 2018. Before that, I was the librarian at Lowell Scott Middle School for five years... and before that, I was an English teacher at Columbia High School.
My husband teaches at Rocky Mountain High School. We have two sons - Henry and Daniel.
I'm a Fellow of the National Writing Project and a Brother of Kappa Kappa Psi. I'm also a member of Sigma Tau Delta and Phi Kappa Phi.
I have ADHD and love learning more about different neurotypes and how they can affect people. I also love teaching other people about how ADHD and autism look different in different people, and what amazing things neurodivergent people can do, and how the world can be made better for all kinds of people.
Growing up, I lived in Austin, Albuquerque, and - mostly - Colorado Springs. My family moved to Boise the summer before my freshman year, and I graduated from Meridian High School followed by Boise State University. I was a diehard marching band member all through high school and college, and band is still one of my very favorite things!
When I was a kid, I wanted to grow up to be a storm-chaser, a paleontologist, an astronaut, a Coast Guard helicopter pilot, a disaster first responder, a National Geographic photojournalist.... basically, I wanted adventure! So I did the logical thing when I actually grew up, and became an educator. Every day is a new adventure when you work in the schools. I believe that the most important thing any educator can do is to take care of the mental and emotional growth and well-being of the students they interact with, and I love that being a librarian allows me to focus on the good instead of worrying about the checkboxes! I also love that my chosen career embraces my personal "Ms. Frizzle" fashion aesthetic. :)
I'm interested in cross stitch, dinosaurs, cryptids, neurodiversity (especially autism and ADHD), old trains, hot air balloons, rummaging, crafts that I'll never actually complete, onomatology, and competitive reality shows (especially The Amazing Race, Cutthroat Kitchen, and Project Runway). My favorite things to read are urban fantasy, science fiction, historical romance, and really fascinating nonfiction.
