Volare is Capital High School's tenor/bass choir. Capital High School’s Volare Tenor Bass Ensemble was born out of the ever-changing 2020-2021 school year when extra classes were added to teachers' schedules in order to keep those class sizes down. By pulling a small group of lower voices from the larger mixed choir, a new group was created. The camaraderie between the singers was evident immediately, despite the fact that many had only seen each other on a computer screen. As the year progressed we realized that we had something special on our hands and worked to create a permanent home for the choir in the program. This year’s singers were carefully selected by audition, and all are dedicated to pursuing the mission of the group: soaring as we strive for musical excellence. The name “Volare” is the Latin verb “to fly” which we chose not only because it captures the spirit of our mascot, the eagle, but also the passion with which these musicians approach their work.
In particular, the choir prides itself on creativity, collaboration, and innovation. This fall the group arranged a version of Sixteen Tons which included a rhythmic backdrop composed by the vocalists which they all performed with hammers, shovels and rakes under the leadership of a student conductor. At the IMEA All State Conference they will premier Winter:Will originally by The Acadian Wild, a piece they both selected and transcribed, which will feature students playing guitar, mandolin, and more. The singers chose each piece in their All State set, a process which has given them a deep sense of ownership over this performance.
