Tips on finding the different sections:

Is there a melodic or rhythmic idea that you hear more than once?

Is there a chord pattern that repeats more than once?

List the different sections of the music

Create a table of the sections and give bar numbers or track times of the changes

2. Do any sections repeat?

If yes - are the sections exactly the same? Describe in detail any changes.

eg.

The first 2 times the chorus is heard, it is exactly the same. The third chorus is different because the electric guitar is added and the drums play a lot more fills throughout the section. There are also backing vocals added in the third chorus. These changes to the third chorus build the music up and create tension.

3. What happens in the music when the sections change?

How do you know there is a new section? Describe the changes in the music.

Do the lyrics change? Drum fills? Different guitar strum or piano technique? New or different chords?

Does the composer change the melody (or harmony)? Describe how.

Other things to discuss:

Does the music feel like it increases in tension? Decreases?

Can you describe the arc from tension and back to relaxation?

Can you describe where these events happen in the music?

Does the accompaniment change or remain the same through the whole piece?
