Now that you have a design from step 3 and design requirements from step 2 it is time to select the materials available to you to create your product.
For example, shoes can be made from leather, but they can also be made from plastic, or even cotton. All three options are valid choices for using as materials.
In addition to this, there will be multiple parts to your design. They all need to be listed. Going with the same example as before, shoes have a sole that is made from a different material to the upped, which is the part that covers your feet. Shoelaces will also be made from yet another material. In between the sole and the upped is the foot padding that is made from yet another type of material.
Each part of a product is made from a material, and each part has the option of being made from various different materials.
It is now your job to list all the materials that can be used for each part of your design. This is the step that takes the longest and can be tedious, but it is important to consider all the available options to you and weigh all you options carefully.
Now that you have looked at the fourth step in the design process, do the following.
List all the components (parts) of your design. If you are unsure how many parts there are to your design then google a similar design and see how many parts there are to a similar design.
For each part, list all the material choices available to you for that part. If you are unsure as to what material can be used, google that part and research what materials are suitable for it.
Justify, or explain why, you have picked certain materials for certain parts - For example : This could be because of the properties of the materials, or because of where you will be using the product.
