As teachers, we know that not all students learn at the same rate or by the same means. Therefore, it is essential that we provide opportunities for small group instruction in our classrooms. Various frameworks can be used in order to structure your small group time.
Some teachers may decide to conduct small groups as other students complete independent or small group tasks. The following resource from Curriculum Associates provides support in planning for small group instruction: Deliver Differentiated Instruction
Some teachers may choose to use a Guided Math and/or Workshop Model for math instruction. While this framework may vary, most Guided Math structures involve the following components: Warm-up, Whole-Class Instruction or Mini-Lesson, Small Group Instruction, Math Workshop, and Individual Conferences. Other essential components include a classroom environment for numeracy and ongoing assessment. Check out the following resources to learn more about Guided Math instruction:
Another framework for small group math instruction is Math Daily 3 where students experience Math By Myself, Math Writing, and Math With Someone. Visit the following link to learn more: Math Daily 3
Math playlists (also called menus or choice boards) can also be used to provide students with an agenda which outlines daily math tasks. Check out this resource to learn more: Math Playlists Facilitate Small Groups
