Beautification Club
The Beautification Club here at BGJHS is a club where you and a group of like-minded individuals will be working together to create amazing murals that will be decorating our school. We will meet to discuss, implement, and create artwork to help benefit us as artists, and to help benefit our community by way of expressing ourselves through these wonderful pieces of artwork and sharing them with our friends and family. Students are selected from both 7th and 8th grade for participation.
The BGJHS TV Crew are a select group of 8th graders that type, record, edit, and interview people for any news at BGJHS for the morning announcements. The students will be reading announcements in the office 3 days a week and staying after school 2 days days a week to edit and copy any announcements for the day. Then they are video recorded, edited, and posted on youtube to be played during homeroom on each teacher's TV. These students will also interview teachers, coaches, and students for any information that may be interesting to the school and community.
Makerspaces, hackerspaces, or fablabs promote invention, creation, tinkering, exploration, design, discovering and learning using various tools, craft materials, recycled materials, electronics, hardware supplies, and more. The engineering process is discussed and put into action. Typically Makerspace meets on Tuesday´s before school and on Thursday´s after school and is open to both 7th and 8th graders.
Makerspace sessions can take on different forms for members.
One form is a design challenge. Students work during a timed session to complete a task. For example, using the following materials, design a device that can entertain a small child on a long travel day.
Another form involves an ongoing creation or project. Students work on an ongoing project that interests them. It might be an invention they are developing or just creating an object or device that sparked their interest. They have access to the tools and materials in the lab and are guided by the instructor(s) there.
Chess Club
Does your child love “gaming?” Then they would love a game that crosses cultures and eras of time! The Chess Club meets twice a month for students to come together to compete against each other in the classic game of chess. This game has been shown to help kids with math skills, critical thinking skills, strategy, and even test taking skills. More importantly, they have fun while learning the game and making new friends! We have also found that this game helps connect family members. Students often learn the game of chess from parents, grandparents, siblings, other relatives and neighbors! The Chess Club promotes unplugging, and reconnecting with families and friends.
The Drama Club is an organization meant to give students a chance to act and sing on stage. The club is open to 7th and 8th graders. The club is a fun way to make friends and enjoy music. The show will almost always be performed in March. So watch for announcements and come see it!
English Festival
English Festival is an optional, competitive activity for 7th and 8th graders. This is a rare type of activity for teens that aims at celebrating literature and authors. There is a recommendation process for students that are interested, as there are only so many spots available. Ultimately, students are required to read seven novels throughout the school year. These novels are chosen by the Youngstown State University English Festival Committee members. In April, students will attend YSU and compete against surrounding schools regarding their knowledge of the books.
H.O.P.E. Club (Helping Our Planet Earth) Club
The HOPE club is offered to any Boardman Glenwood Junior High School student in grades 7 and 8 with a particular interest in the environment and overall desire to help and be more involved in nature. The club focuses on reducing the impact our school has on the environment through various recycling efforts within the school while trying to create awareness of this impact to the whole student body. Students are guided in determining the direction of the club and the activities it participates in. Students take on a large responsibility for collecting and reducing waste in and out of the school. Students have also undertaken an exemplary project in transforming the school’s courtyard into wildflower and raised bed gardens. Help us grow food to share with our fellow students!
The Math 24 Club is ran by Mrs. Ebie and Mrs. Carpenter and will take place in Mrs. Ebie’s room. . It consists of students in 7th and 8th grade students playing the fast pace game of Math 24.. The game is played with sets of cards with 4 numbers that you have to add, subtract, multiply or divide to make the total “24”. There is usually a county wide competition held in January at Campbell Middle School where students compete against other school districts.
Math Counts
Math Counts is run by Mrs. Ebie and Mrs. Carpenter. Math Counts meetings will take place in Mrs. Ebie’s room. It consists of sixteen 7th and 8th grade students. Students take a test in October to determine their placement on a team or if they will compete as an individual. Students practice mathematical questions with other students in the club to prepare for the regional competition that is held at YSU in February. There, students compete in a series of competitive mathematical rounds against other local schools. Students compete as a team, or as an individual throughout the competition. The mathematical questions that are asked at the competition are higher level mathematics problems beyond the classroom standards. Students are then able to qualify for the State Competition in Columbus, which is held during the month of March.
