The Boardman High School Lady Tankers competed this past weekend at the Northeast Ohio District Championships held at Cleveland State University Busby Natatorium, and placed 5th in a field of 38 teams. The Boardman team qualified 2 relays and 2 individuals that will compete at the Ohio High School Swimming State Championships held at Canton McKinley’s CT Branin Natatorium on Friday and Saturday February 21st-22nd.
“One of our favorite sayings this year is from legendary Texas coach Eddie Reese. He would say, “If you want to swim fast, you have to swim fast.” Nothing is more true at this D1 District meet. This competition is tough…you can have fast times all year long, but you must hit at this meet in order to advance. That creates a bit of pressure. Our first race of the day was our Girl’s Medley Relay which was seeded 6th going into this meet. Right out of the gate, our lead-off swimmer, Aly Murray had an incredible backstroke leg which gave our 2nd swimmer, Petra Crnjak a nice lead going into the breaststroke. “Aly has been working on her underwater kick all season long. This was the perfect way to start that race.” Once Gina DiNapoli dove in to swim her fly leg, we knew we were in pretty good shape with her split of :26.0, and Alex Taylor anchored this relay for a 2nd overall finish and an automatic bid to the State Meet. We dropped almost 6 seconds from last week and a great way to kick off things! The Spartans’ 200 Freestyle Relay also qualified for the State Championship by placing 3rd overall with a time of 1:39.15, just missing the team mark by .03. In this race, our sprinters Alex Taylor, Petra Crnjak, and Abbi Mihok wanted to get into open water by grabbing a nice lead in the outside lane and having DiNapoli hold on as anchor. They performed well.
Sophomore Alex Taylor qualified individually for the State Championships by earning an automatic berth by placing 2nd in the 100 Freestyle (52.80) and 5th in the 50 Free (24.17).
Senior Gina DiNapoli qualified individually for the State Championships by placing 4th overall in the 100 fly and posting a :58.99.
The Girl’s 400 Free Relay team of freshman Gina DiNapoli, Abbi Mihok, Petra Crnjak, and Ella Miller placed 6th overall and just missed the State Meet by a mere 2 seconds.
Freshman standouts Rachel DunLany reached a PB in the 200 Free (2:04.21) placing 12th and 16th in the 100 Back (1:02.72), while freshman Cora Taylor reached a PB in the 100 Free (57.82) and in the 100 Back (1:04.36). Senior Petra Crnjak placed 20th in the 50 Free (25.65), senior Abbi Mihok placed 11th in the 100 Fly (1:02.70). Ella Miller, sophomore racer, reached PB and 13th place in the 200 IM (2:21.04) and 10th in the 100 Fly with a PB of (1:01.93). Junior backstroker Aly Murray punched a 1:00.89 placing 11th overall in the 100 Back, while Junior Julia Pickens placed 29h in the 100 Fly (1:06.00) and reached a PB in the 500 Free (5:51.65).
Boardman Divers, Mazie Kauffman placed 16th, senior Grace Miller 29th, senior Lily Warren was 34th, and sophomore Ella McGee was 48th.

The Boardman High School Boys Swim Team competed this past weekend at the Northeast Ohio District Championships held at Cleveland State University Busby Natatorium and placed 8th in a field of 38 teams. The Boardman boys qualified 3 individuals that will compete at the Division 1 Ohio High School Swimming State Championships held at Canton McKinley’s CT Branin Natatorium on Friday and Saturday February 21-22.
Senior diver RJ Keating will make his 4th appearance at the State Championships. “RJ has rebounded well from back surgery and a broken foot from last season. He is now ready to compete at this state level one last time with Diving Coach Ron Navarra. He is motivated to place in the top 16 in the state.
Sophomore Zac Mihok placed 5th in the 200 Free (1:45.51) and 5th in the 100 Back (52.34) and qualified for the State Championships in both events. “Zac’s 200 free was incredibly controlled. He has worked very hard for this moment, and when he split a “50 point” at the 100 mark, we knew he just needed to hang on. His backstroke was a bit different…he took off and wasn’t going to slow down until he was done.”
Senior sprinter Matthew Amendol had one of the greatest surprises of the entire meet. “Matthew was seeded 15th in the 100 free. He crushed his race and placed 3rd overall, and automatically qualified for the State Championship. “Matthew narrowly missed qualifying in the 50 free by just a small margin of .07 of a second.”
“Our relays were running hot and were close, but needed to go just a bit faster to get in. Running in the 200 Free and 400 Free Relays were Zac Mihok, Dominic White, Jack Benson, and Matthew Amendol. The 200 placed 5th (1:29.93) and the 400 placed 7th (3:19.57). They gave it their all. They made us proud.”
The boys Medley Relay consisted of freshman Carter Yocum, junior Timmy DiTosto, junior Sam DiStefano, and sophomore Lee Arent placed 18th with a 1:48.17. This relay continued to improve over the last two weeks. Yocum has become a great underwater kicker off the start, Timmy keeps dropping time in the breast, Sam has become very strong in the fly due to getting big in the weight room, and Lee happens to be one of our biggest surprises of the season with his sprints and butterfly swims.
Other swimmers for Boardman that placed individually at the Districts level include senior Matthew Beichner who reached his PB and placed 24th in the 100 Breast (1:07.34), Sophomore Jack Benson who reached PB in the 200 Free placing 22nd (1:55.32) and 13th in the 100 Free (49.58), Sam DiStefano placed 24th in the 100 Fly (58.86), junior Grant Parker placed 32nd in the 100 Back (1:04.74), sophomore Dominic White placed 26th and reached a PB in the 200 IM (2:13.64), and 30th in the 100 Fly (59.80), and freshman Carter Yocum who placed 26th in the 100 Back with a time of 1:00.53.

The Boardman Spartan Swim and Dive Teams qualified 25 athletes to compete in the 2025 Northeast District Division I High School Swimming and Diving Championships in Cleveland. This is the largest team Boardman has qualified for Districts. Nineteen swimmers and six divers will represent the Spartans at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium on the campus of Cleveland State University. The divers will compete on Thursday and the swimmers will compete on Saturday with the goal of qualifying for the D1 Ohio State Championships the following weekend in Canton. Only 32 total athletes per event qualify for the Ohio State Swimming Championships.
“Our boys competed well today. The kids that were rested had a great meet, and some swam fast enough to qualify for Districts next week. Our “District Taper” boys did well enough too, but this meet is a bit of a grind for them as they did not shave or taper for Sectionals. As tired as they were, they did what they needed to do and pushed through to Districts. Now they can begin to rest and have some fun!” All three of our relays got in with safe starts so we know we can go faster. Our Medley Relay started us off with a time of 1:48.45 which was good for 4th place (Carter Yocum, Timmy DiTosto, Sam DiStefano, and Lee Arent). Our 200 Free Relay (Zac Mihok, Dominic White, Jack Benson, Matthew Amendol) snagged 5th with a time of 1:31.62. They wanted to go faster, and they will. Our 400 Free Relay of Zac Mihok, Dominic White, Jack Benson, Matthew Amendol also qualified by placing 5th with a time of 3:29.11. Our boys have some work to do to get to the next level but are zoned in on this goal.

This is the largest team Boardman has qualified for Districts. Nineteen swimmers and six divers will represent the Spartans at the Robert F. The Girl’s Medley Relay team of Aly Murray (Jr), Petra Crnjak (Sr), Gina DiNapoli (Sr), and Alex Taylor (So) placed 5th with a time of 1:53.20 and qualified for Districts next week. “This was a great race to start the morning for us,” Coach Cordon commented. “Our girls were unshaved, untapered, and did not wear tech suits for this meet. They went to work and set the tone for the rest of the meet. We had most of our Sectional taper kids with lifetime best swims, and now we begin resting our District kids for the upcoming weekend.
The girl’s 200 and 400 free relays also qualified for Districts. The 200 Freestyle relay placed 4th with members Alex Taylor, Petra Crnjak, Abbi Mihok, and Gina Dinapoli with a time of 1:41.63. The 400 Freestyle placed 5th with swimmers Gina DiNapoli, Aly Murray, Petra Crnjak, and Ella Miller with a time of 3:50.12. “All of our relays had conservative starts and swam well in the water. This sets us up nicely for next weekend in trying to get to the next level of competition. They still have more in the tank,” Coach Cordon explained.

This is where we will be swimming in two weeks for our Sectional Meet and hopefully for the State Championships. We enjoy getting a few races in this pool against two storied programs with GlenOak and McKinley before tournament time. Our girls finished the regular season undefeated, and now, they will begin to rest and prepare for their tournament portion of the season,” mentioned Coach Cordon.

For the past 4 seasons, the Seniors of the Boardman Swim and Dive Team have done nothing more than train twice a day, swim 5000 yards a practice, brave the freezing cold while jumping in a pool, in hopes of continuing the winning tradition of the Spartan Swim Program. They have reached that goal.
It was a cold and chilly Thursday night. However, the Beeghly Natatorium was toasty warm with over 350 spectators that came to honor Boardman’s 11 Seniors. For the 7 girls and 4 boys, this was bittersweet. They will not miss the early morning practices, nor the test sets. They will, however, miss this extension of their family, the friends they have met, the teammates they have traveled with, and the memories they have made. This was their last home meet as a Spartan.
“Howland is a well coached team and has some very talented swimmers. Our seniors were excited to see the crowd that showed up to support them, including their relatives, their peers at school, our administrators, and teachers.”
Our senior girls Lily Warren, Grace Miller, Petra Crnjak, Abbi Mihok, Gina DiNapoli, Grace Butto, and Sophia Rubino have been great Senior role models all year.” mentioned Coach Cordon.
Double Event Winners for the Spartans include Sophomore Alex Taylor in the 200 Free (1:58.86) and the 100 Backstroke (1:01.64).
Single Event Winners include Senior Petra Crnjak in the 50 Free (25.63), Junior Mazie Kauffman in the 1 meter diving (185.10), Senior Gina DiNapoli in the 100 Fly (1:01.40), Senior Abbi Mihok in the 100 Free (59.84), and Freshman Rachel DunLany in the 500 Free (5:50.52).

The Boardman Spartan Swim and Dive Team has 4 Seniors Boys. For them, their Senior Night was surreal. They will miss so many things about this team…Poker Night, dinner at Scarcellas, winning the NEAC and AAC Championships, and especially their very last home meet as a Spartan.
With a crowd of over 350 spectators, these seniors and the rest of the Spartans took down a surging Howland team with a solid team performance. “Our 4 senior boys were recognized with their families prior to the meet, and they were fired up to see so many of their classmates in attendance cheering them on. Matthew Amendol, Matthew Beichner, Emerson Hare, and RJ Keating all had an incredible night.”
Double Event winners for the Spartans were Sophomore Zac Mihok in the 200 IM (2:10.45) and the 100 Backstroke (56.56), and Senior Matthew Amendol in the 50 Free (23.41) and the 100 Free (50.31).

January 11, 2025: The Spartan Lady Tankers Swimmers won their 11th consecutive AAC Conference Championship with an impressive TEAM performance. “This is a great local conference with talented swimmers from the Youngstown and Warren areas. This meet is held at the Warren Harding Natatorium located right on their school campus adjacent to their new indoor training facility. “If I ever hit the lottery, this is what we are going to build.”
In order for us to be competitive at this meet, all of our athletes needed to contribute. Swimming in general tends to be an individual sport, especially as we get closer to tournament time. However, Conference Championships are all about the TEAM. Our younger swimmers were asked to step up and swim events they have never tried before. Coaches Chelsea DeAngelo, Mark Brooks, and Mikel Flatley have worked very hard with our developmental group, and now these kids have become a pivotal part of our team strength,” mentioned Coach Cordon.
The Boardman Lady Tankers, just coming off a NEAC conference win a week ago, swam their way to their 11th AAC Championship win. “‘These two consecutive weekends in January are the final push before we reach the tournament season. This AAC swim conference (Canfield, Howland, Warren Harding, Austintown) is loaded with talent. Most of these kids have been swimming with or against each other since they were 8 years old. So there is an amount of bragging rights with this win!”
The Boardman Girls also broke a combination of individual and relay records at the WGH Natatorium.
Boardman girls won 10 of 12 events including:
Double event winners: Sophomore Alex Taylor, who won Female Swimmer of the Meet, winning the 200 IM with a new Meet and Team Record (2:11.95), while also setting a new Meet and Pool record in the 100 Free (53.18). Senior standout Gina DiNapoli, won the 50 Free (25.61) and snagged 1st in the 100 Butterfly (1:01.08).
Junior Aly Murray, who placed 1st in the 500 Free (5:40.94) and then jumping right back in and winning the 100 Backstroke (1:01.54). What we ask Aly to do is difficult. She swims the longest race in high school swimming (the 500), and has very little recovery before getting right back in for her backstroke race. Her toughness is commendable.
Boardman’s Single Event Winners Include: Freshman Rachel DunLany, who won the 200 Free (2:05.43) while also placing 2nd in the 100 Back (1:02.43). Rachel has a very smooth and distance per stroke and we are excited to see how she continues to improve.
The Spartans won all three relay events while setting new marks in the 200 Medley and the 200 Free Relays. “The 200 Medley (Aly Murray, Petra Crnjak, Ella Miller, and Alex Taylor) opened the meet with a great time and new AAC record of 1:50.09. The team of Alex Taylor, Petra Crnjak, Abbi Mihok, and Gina DiNapoli also broke the Pool and AAC record in the 200 Free Relay (1:41.19). The Spartans closed out the meet and won the final event, the 400 Free Relay with a time of 3:53.52 with senior Gina DiNapoli, senior Abbi Mihok, junior Aly Murray, and sophomore Ella Miller.
Other top 3 places to podium: Senior Abbi Mihok 2nd in the 100 Fly and 2nd in the 500 Free, sophomore Ella Miller 3rd in the 200 IM and 3rd in the 100 Free, senior Petra Crnjak 2nd in the 50 Free, Julia Pickens 3rd in the 100 Fly, Mazie Kauffman, placing 2nd in diving after returning to the boards after recovering from knee surgery, and Lily Warren 3rd in 1 meter diving.
We had great swims from junior Sam Viano in the 100 Fly and her 100 Free split, senior Sophia Rubino dropped more time in the 100 breast along with sophomore Kaylee Trolio, who dropped 6 seconds in the 100 Breast. Newcomer to the sport, Gianna Berardino swam a great 100 backstroke and will contend for a spot on our Sectional roster with her time, senior Grace Butto also dropped hit her PB’s in the 100 Back and 100 Free, junior Lydia Kenney is becoming a very strong distance swimmer in the 200 Free, Emma Chunn wasn’t feeling very well, but swam a great 100 Breast near the end of the meet, and Allie Boyer had a strong swim in the 100 Backstroke, Grace Miller pulling a double session for us…diving first in the morning, and staying to swim in the afternoon and placing top 8 in both events, and Mary Melone, who can swim just about any event we put her in, is someone we rely on to lock in a scoring spot in the IM and sprint events.

December 7, 2024: The Boardman Boys won the NEAC Conference Relay Meet at Warren Harding in a classic showdown between 8 teams. “This meet is full of tough races and excitement. Our boys haven’t won this meet since 2021. This took a total team effort to pull off this win and it started with our diving relay with senior Emerson Hare, who hasn’t dove in 2 years, stepping in for RJ Keating who was out with an illness, and pairing with Shane Plourde while snagging a 2nd place finish in the diving relay. This was a great start for the team, and we are proud of what our kids are willing to do for our TEAM. Out of 10 events, our boys only won 3. However, our team depth really paid off and we kept snagging 2nd and 3rd places in the other relays. This was enough for us to win the meet.
Boardman’s first place relays include: the 200 Butterfly Relay (Grant Parker, Carter Yocum, Lee Arent, and Samuel DiStefano), the 200 Backstroke Relay (Carter Yocum, Jack Benson, Matthew Amendol, and Zac Mihok), and the 200 Breaststroke Relay which brought the house down (Timmy DiTosto, Timofei Vinogradov, Emerson Hare, and Matthew Beichner).

December 7, 2024: On a cold and crisp Saturday morning, Warren Harding hosted the Northeast Aquatic Conference Relay Championship meet. “This meet includes all 8 teams from our conference dand we compete in relay events only,” stated Coach Carlo Cordon. The kids are excited to swim in different relays and to see how much their hard work has paid off. We were incredibly proud with how well our kids swam, but we were more impressed with the support they had for one another. This is what these meets are all about!”
“Out of 10 events, our girls won 5. We wanted to finish strong at the end of the meet, and we did. We had many great swims, and the coaching staff was happy with how well our young swimmers competed. Our relays that grabbed a 1st place included the Medley Relay (Aly Murray, Petra Crnjak, Gina DiNapoli, and Alex Taylor), our 200 butterfly Relay (Ella Miller, Abbi Mihok, Alex Taylor, and Gina DiNapoli), our 200 Free Relay (Abbi Mihok, Rachel DunLany, Ella Miller, and Petra Crnjak), our 400 Medley IM Relay (Abbi Mihok, Julia Pickens, Cora Taylor, Ella Miller), and our 400 Freestyle Relay (Aly Murray, Petra Crnjak, Gina DiNapoli, Alex Taylor).

Our captains, Aly Murray, Gina DiNapoli, Petra Crnjak, Abbi Mihok, and Sophia Rubino, not only raced well, but also were pivotal in preparing our underclassmen for their first high school competition. The Boardman High School Boys Swim Team competed this past weekend at the Northeast Ohio District Championships held at Cleveland State University Busby Natatorium and placed 5th in a field of 38 teams. The Boardman boys qualified 1 individual and 2 relays that will compete at the Division 1 Ohio High School Swimming State Championships held at Canton McKinley’s CT Branin Natatorium on Friday and Saturday February 23rd and 24th.
On the boy’s side, Junior diver RJ Keating will make his 3rd appearance at the State Championships. “RJ has been battling a back injury all season. Diving Coach Ron Navarra had a very good training plan for him to get through the season as pain free as possible and perform well at this meet. RJ placed 8th overall and will now advance and dive on Tuesday February 20th. RJ was top 16 last season is motivated to do even better.
The Boys 200 Medley Relay Team of freshman Zac Mihok, senior Ben Herrmann, senior Landon Mitchell, and junior Matthew Amendol, after watching their teammates on the girls side automatically qualify for the State Championships, decided they wanted to join them in Canton. “They were motivated all season to get to this moment. We narrowly missed getting into the State Meet last season with two relays, so these boys worked extremely hard since March of 2023. This Medley dropped over 5 seconds and placed 3rd overall with a time of 1:36.20. These boys swam incredibly well. They lit up the board with fast splits. These same 4 boys placed 2nd in the 200 Free Relay and qualified automatically with a time of 1:27.64.
The Boys 400 Free Relay (Owen Lee, Samuel DiStefano, Jack Benson, and Mason Prosser) placed 14th overall with a time of 3:33.88.

The Boardman High School Lady Tankers competed this past weekend at the Northeast Ohio District Championships held at Cleveland State University Busby Natatorium and placed 9th in a field of 38 teams. The Boardman girls broke 3 team records while qualifying 2 relays and 2 individuals that will compete at the Ohio High School Swimming State Championships held at Canton McKinley’s CT Branin Natatorium on Friday and Saturday February 23th and 24th.
“This meet can be mentally grueling…you can have fast times all year long, but you must hit your best times at this meet in order to advance. This, of course, creates a bit of pressure for these kids to perform at this level, at this moment, when it’s needed the most. Our first race of the day was our Girl’s Medley Relay which was seeded 5th going into this meet. Our girls (Aly Murray, Petra Crnjak, Gina DiNapoli, and Alex Taylor) crushed their times right out of the gate, dropped almost 5 seconds and placed 2nd overall…we were pumped! This automatically punched their ticket to the State Meet next weekend. Their time of 1:47.50 broke our previous Team Record by .50. This definitely set the stage for the rest of the meet. The Spartans’ 200 Freestyle Relay also qualified for the State Championship by placing 4th overall with a time of 1:39.16, just missing the Team Record by .03. In this race, we had our sprinters (Petra Crnjak, Abbi Mihok, Gina DiNapoli, and Alex Taylor) pumped up and they performed well. This relay will also be heading to Canton for the State Championships.
Freshman Alex Taylor qualified individually for the State Championships by earning an automatic berth by placing 2nd in the 50 Freestyle, breaking her own record with a :23.67. Alex posted the fastest relay split in the District with a 23.11, and we knew she would go fast in her 50. Taylor also qualified individually with a 4th place finish in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:54.51. Junior Gina DiNapoli qualified individually for the State Championships by placing 4th overall and breaking her own Team Record in the 100 butterfly and going a :57.97. Gina has gotten much stronger this season and her underwater kick-outs were amazing. That was the key to her race today! Gina also placed 15th overall in the 200 IM (2:20.91).
The Girl’s 400 Free Relay team of freshman Ella Miller, senior Sam Murray, junior Abbi Mihok, and sophomore Aly Murray also placed 13th with a time of 3:49.86.

Since transferring to Boardman his sophomore year, Mason has been a 3x Varsity Letterman, 2x District Qualifier, 3x NEAC All Star, and was voted to be a team captain his Senior Year.
Congratulations to Mason and good luck next year!
“This was the first time we have attended this meet. Our team numbers continue to grow. However, we are limited to how many kids we can send to Sectionals. These three girls have worked really hard this season and we wanted for them to finish with a championship style meet. 30 of their teammates came in support and cheered these three on!” mentioned Coach Cordon.
“All three girls did amazing, dropping time and hitting their personal bests in all of their events!
Sophomore Peyton Konnerth led the three Spartans by placing 2nd in the 200 IM with a time of 2:47.77 and reaching the podium ceremony. Konnerth also placed 12th In the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:29.20, dropping 2 seconds from her previous best.

January 27, 2024: “We had a great meet today and we enjoyed making the trip to Canton to swim in a pool where we will be visiting in two weeks for our Sectional meet. Our boys have really worked hard this season for their success. Our upperclassmen have really bonded well with the younger guys and they continue to push each other to get faster. They are all willing to swim any event to help out the team. They are a great group of student-athletes. All of these boys push themselves at practice and in the weight room every day in order to reach their goals. We are excited to see what they do during the tournament run when they are a bit more rested,” said Coach Cordon.
Double event winners include Senior Mason Prosser in the 200 IM (2:12.05) and the 500 Free (5:40.36) and Freshman Zac Mihok in the 100 Butterfly (56.37) and the 100 Backstroke (58.05).

We will be here next week for the JV Championships and again in two weeks for our Sectional Tournament. We enjoy getting a few races in this pool before Sectionals so the kids can experience their racing environment. Our kids swam tired, but they pulled out a win vs GlenOak and McKinley. Now, they will begin to rest and prepare for their tournament portion of the season,” mentioned Coach Cordon.

January 25, 2024: For most of the competitive swimmers in this area, Applewood Swim and Tennis Club and the Boardman Tennis and Swim Club are where many of these kids learn to swim… usually as the early of an age 5 or 6. By the time they reach the Boardman High School level, they are racing machines! On a Thursday night at YSU’s Beeghly Natatorium, close to 350 spectators came to honor the 11 Spartan Seniors that have grown and accomplished so much together. For the 5 Senior girls and 6 Senior boys, this was bittersweet. They will not miss the early morning practices and the racing test sets that their coaches would throw their way, but they will miss this family, and so many more things. Especially their very last home meet as a Spartans.
“Poland is a well coached team and has some very talented individuals. However, our 5 seniors were pretty fired up to see their administrators, teachers and friends in the bleachers and were ready to race right out of the gate. Maddie Mraz, Cadence Vlaiku, Sam Murray, Lacie Dray, and MacKenzie Kelso have been great Senior role models all year and raced until the end,” mentioned Coach Cordon.
Double Event Winners for the Spartans include freshman Alex Taylor in the 100 Free (54.53) and the 100 Breaststroke (1:16.26).

The Spartans conclude their regular season this Saturday against Canton GlenOak and Canton McKinley at CT Branin Natatorium in Canton, Ohio.
January 25, 2024: For the 6 Spartan Seniors, this meet was surreal. They will miss so many things about this team, especially the group they had this year and this final moment…their very last home meet as a Spartan.
With a crowd of over 350 spectators, these seniors and the rest of the Spartans took down a surging Poland team with a solid team performance. “Our 6 senior boys were recognized with their families prior to the meet, and they were fired up to see so many of their classmates in attendance cheering them on. Ben Herrmann, Landon Mitchell, Owen Lee, Mason Prosser, Brandon Slick and Vinny Tran all had an incredible meet tonight.”
Leading the Spartan charge was Senior Landon Mitchell, a double winner in the 50 Free (22.95) and the 100 Butterfly (58.52),

January 20, 2024: The Boardman Swim Team traveled to Solon, Ohio to compete in what was to be a Quad Meet between Akron Firestone, Solon, Shaker Heights, and Boardman. “Firestone had to pull out due to the weather. This still made for a very challenging and fast dual meet that nears the end of our dual meet season. Solon’s natatorium is connected to their school and it’s just incredible! Shaker Heights also has a pool attached to their school but are actually building a new one in the next 18 months. Although our goal is to have our own pool someday, we don’t use this as an excuse…we still have to compete at a high end to reach our goals and that is what we are set to do. We swam some great races, our depth paid off, and we were able to win this meet! We were very happy with our swims and know that we still have room to improve,” mentioned Coach Cordon.
Double event winners include freshman Zac Mihok in the 100 Butterfly (55.87) and the 100 Backstroke (57.64). Boardman’s only other event winner was senior Mason Prosser in the 200 IM (2:11.65).
The Spartans captured the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:43.07 with Zac Mihok, senior Ben Herrmann, senior Lanodn Mitchell, and junior Matthew Amendol. The same 4 boys won the 200 free relay in a time of 1:36.11.
The Spartans record now stands at 9-2. They will conclude their regular season this Thursday during their senior night vs Poland and Saturday vs Canton GlenOak and Canton McKinley.
January 20, 2024: The Boardman Lady Tankers split against state powerhouses Solon and Shaker Heights. “We are extremely proud of how well our girls swam. They were swimming tired, but they still swam tough. More importantly, they loved the challenge today against some of the best girls in the District. We know if they want to make it to the next level during tournament time, they have to swim in this type of competition.
Boardman’s Alex Taylor was a double event winner in the 200 freestyle (1:59.41) and in the 100 Free (55.13).
Single event winners were junior Gina DiNapoli in the 100 Butterfly (1:01.08) and sophomore Mazie Kauffman in the 1-meter diving (167.50).

January 13, 2024: Since 2014, the faces have changed…the coaches have changed…however, the one constant that hasn’t changed is that the Spartans are once again the AAC Swimming Champs. In 2014, the Spartans were led by legendary Swimming Coach, Terry O’Halloran. “Coach O’Halloran always enjoyed this meet due to the amount of local talent and the amount of fans that would come and support the kids. Since then, Boardman has won this “Backyard Bragging Rights” and continues to set the standard. I am grateful that I can reach out to Coach “O” anytime for strategy and advice. No surprise, he was the first one to reach out and wish us well before the meet,” mentioned Coach Cordon.
The Boardman Lady Tankers, just coming off a huge NEAC conference win a week ago, swam their way to another championship win. “‘These two consecutive weekends in January are the final push before we reach the tournament season. This AAC swim conference (Canfield, Howland, Warren Harding, Austintown) is loaded with talent. Most of these kids have been swimming with each other on their club team since they were 8 years old. So there is a certain amount of bragging rights with this win! Warren Harding has a great facility to host this meet, and our kids enjoy swimming there.”
Freshman Alex Taylor won Female Swimmer of the Meet, winning the 200 Freestyle with a new Pool, Meet, and Team Record (1:53.70) and the 500 Free with a new Meet Record (5:11.03). Taylor also broke the Pool, Meet, and Team record in the 50 Free (24.23) with her lead off leg of the 200 Free Relay. Junior standout Gina DiNapoli won the 200 IM (2:18.70) by over 4 seconds and also snagged 1st in the 100 Butterfly (1:00.05). Junior Abbi Mihok won the 50 Free (26.31) while placing 2nd in the 500 Free (5:49.18), and sophomore Aly Murray won the 100 backstroke (1:01.22). Sophomore Mazie Kauffman won the 11 dive Championship with a new Team Record in the 11 dive meet with a score of 422.70. “Coach Ron Navarra has been working very hard with our Spartan Divers, and their mastery of their craft is beginning to show. Mazie, along with Grace Miller and Lily Warren are showing more confidence every time they step foot on the board.”
The Spartans won all three relay events while setting a new The girl’s 200 freestyle relay. The team of Taylor, junior Petra Crnjak, Abbi Mihok, and Gina DiNapoli shaved close to a second off the old Meet Record held by Canfield and set a new mark of 1:41.86. The 200 Medley Relay team of Aly Murray, Petra Crnjak, Gina DiNapoli, and Abbi Mihok also placed 1st (1:51.06). The Spartans closed out the meet and won the final event, the 400 Free Relay with a time of 3:51.07 with senior Sam Murray, freshman Ella Miller, Aly Murray, and Alex Taylor.
Other top 3 places to note: Lily Warren 3rd in 1 meter diving, Sam Murray 3rd in the 200 Free and 2nd in the 100 Free, senior Maddie Mraz 3rd in the 200 IM, junior Petra Crnjak 2nd in the 50 Free, senior MacKenzie Kelso 2nd in the 100 Fly and 3rd in the 500 Free, and Julia Pickens 3rd in the 100 Fly.
The Lady Tankers will compete again next Saturday at Solon High School against Solon, Shaker Heights, and Akron Firestone.
Janaury 13, 2024: Since 2014, the faces have changed…the coaches have changed…however, the one constant that hasn’t changed is that the Spartans are once again the AAC Swimming Champs. Our boys have been working very hard and were a bit upset not winning NEAC’s last weekend, but they put that memory away and were really excited for this meet. Coaches Chelsea DeAngelo and Mark Brooks have been working with both teams all week and getting them focused and ready to race. Our boys showed up!”
RJ Keating, coming off a back injury, won the 1 meter diving (442.28) while teammate Vince Tran placed 2nd (405.00) on the boards. Freshman standout Zac Mihok won the 100 Butterfly (53.98) and 2nd in the 100 Back (56.38) while senior Ben Herrmann was the only other event winner for the Spartans with a great come from behind finish in the 100 Breaststroke (1:03.28). Herrmann also snagged a 3rd place finish in the 50 Free. Boardman won two relays, the 200 Medley Relay of Zac Mihok, Ben Herrmann, senior Landon Mitchell, and junior Matthew Amendol (1:40.07) as well as the 200 Free Relay of Herrmann, Amendol, Mihok, and Mitchell.
Other top three finishers include:
Mason Prosser 2nd in the 200 IM (2:05.37) and 2nd in the 500 Free (5:18.10). Mason continues to improve his times in all of his events. Senior Landon Mitchell placed 2nd in the 50 Free and 2nd in the 100 Fly, junior Matthew Amendol placed 2nd in the 100 Free and 3rd in the 100 Back.
The Spartans will compete again next Saturday at Solon High School against Solon, Shaker Heights, and Akron Firestone.
January 9, 2024: In Northeast Ohio, there are two known facts…the weather is unpredictable, and the local swimming talent is deep. On a night when the gusting winds were howling outside Beeghly Natatorium, the Spartans warmed the waters and swam to victory.
“We just came off our NEAC Conference meet this past weekend and sometimes there is a little bit of fatigue that sets in. Satterfield swam the 100 Butterfly and placed 9th, winning the Consolation Finals and receiving an All-Ohio Award with a time of 49.76. This time is also a National All-American Time Consideration. This moves Caleb to 2nd on the Spartan’s All-Time Top 25 right behind State Champion and Navy standout Ryan Bailey. Satterfield also placed 20th in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.85.
Senior Madison Murphy placed 15th in Consolation Finals in the 100 Free with a time of 52.78 and received an All-Ohio Award. “Madison made the jump from high 53’s in the 100 free, to hitting these 52’s her last three swims of her season. That’s a great jump in time. She’s so multidimensional and able to swim any event, but it’s her desire to race that’s her strongest asset.”
Sophomore Gina DiNapoli placed 29th individually in the 100 Butterfly (59.13) with her 2nd fastest time ever, and the 3rd fastest time in school history. “Gina’s potential is unlimited in butterfly, she has such a beautiful stroke to watch and generates a ton of power.”
Senior Lexxi Mihok raced in two relays, the 200 Medley and the 200 Freestyle. “Lexxi is our lead-off backstroker in our 200 Medley Relay. When Coach Chelsea DeAngelo, Coach Mark Brooks and I chatted about our potential relays this past summer, we knew we had some great pieces with Lexxi leading off with her backstroke. We worked on her start a bit, and she focused on her underwater kick-outs, and this made a huge difference. Sophomore Petra Crnjak is our breaststroker, and she just kept getting faster the last two weeks. Sophomore Gina DiNapoli swims our butterfly, and with Murphy as our anchor, we knew she wouldn’t lose a close race.
We knew our Medley needed to go 1:48’s to make it to States, which they did last week at Districts. We also knew they would have to hit this time again to swim in State Finals, and that’s exactly what they did and placed 16th. This is the first time a girl’s Medley Relay from Boardman has gone Top 16 or All-Ohio.
These same 4 girls placed 23rd in State in the 200 Free Relay (1:40.61). “We were seeded 24th so we moved up a spot, and we were just .6 tenths from our best time a week ago. We knew we had to go a bit faster to make it back to finals but we were still happy with the results.”
Competing earlier in the week was sophomore Spartan Diver RJ Keating, who placed 14th in Division 1 Diving. RJ finished with a score of 386.90 and earned All-Ohio Honors. “RJ continues to improve his skills and made a big move from 17th a year ago, to 14th this year. He will continue to improve and we are excited to see what he can do next year as a junior!”
Boardman Swimmers Qualify 6 for the 2023 Ohio High School Division 1 State Championships
The Boardman High School Lady Tankers competed this past weekend at the Northeast Ohio District Championships held at Cleveland State University Busby Natatorium and placed 9th in a field of 37 teams. The Boardman girls smashed 4 Team Records while qualifying 2 relays and 2 individuals that will compete at the Ohio High School Swimming State Championships held at Canton McKinley’s CT Branin Natatorium on Friday and Saturday February 24th and 25th.
“This meet is mentally grueling...you can have fast times all year long, but you need to hit your best times at this meet in order to advance. This, of course, creates a bit of pressure on these kids to perform at this level, at this moment, when it’s needed the most. Our girls (Lexxi Mihok, Petra Crnjak, Gina DiNapoli, and Madison Murphy) hit their Medley Relay times right out of the gate...we were shocked! They posted a 1:48.00, placed 5th, and broke our team record by over 1 second. This definitely set the stage for the rest of the meet. What is truly amazing about this team and it’s culture, some of the girls from the 2014 relay team whose record was just broken (Sarah Gonda, Brooke Bailey, Jessica Hilk, and Jordyn Markovitch) reached out to the coaches to congratulate the girls!” mentioned Coach Cordon. The Spartan’s 200 Freestyle Relay also qualified for the State Championship by placing 4th overall with a time of 1:40.02 (Crnjak, DiNapoli, Mihok, Murphy).
Senior Madison Murphy qualified individually for the State Championships by earning an automatic bid by placing 3rd in the 100 Free (52.56) and breaking the oldest team record set by Ashley Aldan in 2009. Murphy also placed 7th in the 50 Free (24.60). Sophomore Gina DiNapoli qualified individually for the State Championships by dropping a full second in her 100 butterfly, breaking a team record set by Jessica Hilk in 2014, with a time of 58.2. Senior Lexxi Mihok placed 9th in the 100 Backstroke (59.49) and broke the team record held by Sarah Gonda (2014). “Gonda was one of the first people to reach out to Lexxi to congratulate her,” mentioned Cordon. Lexxi also had a career best swim in the 100 Free placing 16th (54.88).
Other Individual swimmers and divers that finished in the top 30 for Boardman include sophomore Mazie Kauffman in 1 meter diving, Julia Basista in the 200 IM and 100 Breast, Maddie Mraz in the 200 IM and 100 Breast, Abbi Mihok in the 100 Butterfly, Sam Murray in the 100 Free, Aly Murray in the 500 Free and 100 Backstroke, and Petra Crnjak in the 50 Free and 100 Breast. The girl’s 400 Free Relay team of Abbi Mihok, Sam Murray, Aly Murray, and Gina DiNapoli finished up the meet with a time drop of 4 seconds and placed 13th (3:49.75).
The Boardman High School Boys Swim Team competed this past weekend at the Northeast Ohio District Championships held at Cleveland State University Busby Natatorium and placed 9th in a field of 37 teams. The Boardman boys qualified 2 individuals that will compete at the Ohio High School Swimming State Championships held at Canton McKinley’s CT Branin Natatorium on Friday and Saturday February 24th and 25th. On the boy’s side, Senior Caleb Satterfield led all Spartans by qualifying automatically in the 100 Butterfly with a 2nd place finish and a time of 50.09. “This was an incredible race and a nice time drop for Caleb. Caleb is a big meet racer, and as the stakes get higher, so does his level of competition! His underwater kick outs were amazing! Caleb also qualified for the Division 1 State Championships by placing 4th in the 200 IM by dropping close to 6 seconds and tagging in at 1:54.48. Caleb broke the team record held by Noah Basista (1:55.46). Also qualifying for the Spartans is sophomore RJ Keating on the 1 meter boards.
“RJ had an incredible round on the boards and is returning to the State Meet stronger and more confident of his abilities. We are excited to see what he can do!”
The 200 Free Relay narrowly missed qualifying for the State Championships by .13 of a second and placed 6th (Satterfield, Matthew Amendol, Landon Mitchell, and Ethan DunLany). The 400 Free Relay placed 9th (Amendol, Mitchell, DunLany, Satterfield) with a time of 3:18.49 and also narrowly qualified for the State Meet. The Boys 200 Medley Relay Team of Mason Prosser, Matthew Beichner, Samuel DiStefano, and Landon Mitchell placed 18th with a time of 1:48.30.
Other boys for Boardman that placed in the top 30 at Districts include Mason Prosser in the 200 IM and the 100 Backstroke, Matthew Amendol in the 50 and 100 Freestyles, Samuel DiStefano in the 100 butterfly, Landon Mitchell in the 100 Freestyle, Ethan DunLany in the 200 Free and 500 Free, Vince Tran in 1 meter diving, and Emerson Hare in 1 meter diving.
Spartans Qualify 21 Athletes for the Division 1 Northeast District Swimming and Diving Championships
Seniors Caleb Satterfield and Ethan DunLany Sectional Champs in 100 Butterfly and 500 Free
Spartan Boys Place 5th Overall
The Boardman Spartan Swim and Dive Teams qualified 21 athletes to compete in the 2023 Northeast DistrictvDivision I High School Swimming and Diving Championships in Cleveland. Sixteen swimmers and five divers will represent the Spartans at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium on the campus of Cleveland State University. The divers will compete on Thursday and the swimmers will compete on Saturday with the goal of qualifying for the Ohio State Championships the following weekend in Canton. Only 32 total athletes per event qualify for the Ohio State Swimming Championships.
Caleb Satterfield won the 100 Butterfly in an exciting come from behind race. “Caleb had an incredible 3rd turn and he used his underwater kickout to power underneath the turbulence that was on top of the water...this gave him the edge the final 25 yards and he tagged 1st with a time of 52.10. Ethan DunLany was Sectional Champion in the 500 Freestyle last season, and he placed 1st this season with a time of 4:52.42.
“Ethan is fun to watch in the distance events. He goes after every length of the pool and doesn’t seem to get tired. He is now swimming this race cognitively and has begun lengthening out his strokes. This will make him even faster next weekend. We had solid races from all of our boys, such as Matthew Amendol, Mason Prosser, and Landon Mitchell. Landon, a junior, hasn’t been able to swim since his freshman year due to two MCL surgeries that have sidelined his swimming season. He had incredible swims! We snuck in a few kids for next week’s District meet along with getting all three of our relays in. We were safe on our relay starts and raced the other teams once we hit the water. Our boys have been motivated all season and are very excited for next week,” Coach Cordon quoted.

Lady Tankers Take 4th Overall
The Boardman Spartan Swim and Dive Teams qualified 21 athletes to compete in the 2023 Northeast District Division I High School Swimming and Diving Championships in Cleveland. The divers will compete on Thursday and the swimmers will compete on Saturday with the goal of qualifying for the Ohio State Championships the following weekend in Canton. The Girl’s Medley Relay team of Lexxi Mihok (Sr), Petra Crnjak (So), Gina DiNapoli (So), and Madison Murphy (Sr) placed 4th with a time of 1:52.97 and qualified for Districts next week. “This was a great race to start the morning for us,” Coach Cordon commented. “Our girls were unshaved, untapered, and did not wear tech suits for this meet. For the rest of the team to watch them light it up in the first event was an indication on how well the rest of the team was going to do. We had most of our Sectional taper kids with lifetime best swims, and now we begin resting our District kids even more for the upcoming weekend.
The girl’s 200 and 400 free relays also qualified for Districts. The 200 Freestyle relay placed 3rd with members Madison Murphy, Petra Crnjak, Gina DiNapoli, and Lexxi Mihok with a 3rd place time of 1:42.76. The 400 Freestyle members Abbi Mihok (So), Sam Murray (Jr), Aly Murray (Fr), and Gina DiNapoli (So) placed 7th with a time of 3:54.97. “All of our relays were conservative on their starts and swam well in the water. This sets us up nicely for next weekend in trying to get to the next level of competition. They will have to go faster, but we feel they still have more in the tank,”Coach Cordon explained.

There are dozens of fine restaurants you can find along the cold and lonely trail of Highway 62, but none taste quite as good as the BK Bistro mixed with the sweet taste of victory. “Our boys have really worked hard this season for their success. We have a nice group of upperclassmen who have really bonded well with the younger guys. They are all willing to swim any event to help out the team. They are a great group of student-athletes. All of these boys push themselves at practice and in the weight room every day in order to reach their goals. We are excited to see what they do during the tournament run!”,” said Coach Cordon.

On Saturday afternoon, the Northeast Aquatic Conference hosted their annual Relay Championship meet at Warren G. Harding High School. “This is a conference meet where all 8 teams compete in different relay events only,” stated Coach Carlo Cordon. There is a ton of excitement, and the venue is conducive to a competition in team spirit! We loved how our team supported one another. This is what these meets are all about!”
“Last year at this meet, our girl’s team won just 1 event. This year, our girls won 5 and it started right out of the gate when we posted a 1:52.00 Medley Relay. Just two events later, our 200 Butterfly Relay broke a 20 year old meet record by 3 seconds! This record was held by Canton McKinley, which is no longer a team in the NEAC Conference. “We started looking at this relay over the summer when our girls were training at their respective summer swim clubs (Applewood Swim Club and Boardman Tennis and Swim Club). We kept drawing up the splits on paper and we knew we had a shot at this record, but we needed them to hit their times, and they did.” First place relays for the Spartan Tankers: 200 Medley Relay team of Lexxi Mihok, Petra Crnjak, Gina DiNapoli, and Madison Murphy (1:52.00), the 100 Freestyle Relay team of Madison Mraz, Morgan Russo, Sam Murray, and MacKenzie Kelso (:51.57), the 200 Butterfly Relay team of(Abbi Mihok, Gina DiNapoli, Lexxi Mihok, and Madison Murphy *(1:50.96), the 200 Breaststroke Relay team of Maddie Mraz, Olivia Pickens, Julia Basista, and Petra Crnjak (2:18.91), and the 400 Freestyle Relay team of Madison Murphy, Aly Murray, Gina DiNapoli, and Lexxi Mihok (3:52.02).

“When the entire meet comes down to one race, and that one race happens to be at the end of the meet with both teams having loaded relays, you have to just let them lay it on the line,” stated Coach Cordon. “We didn’t have to tell them much. Wooster’s 400 Relay beat us by 7 seconds last weekend and we wanted to make it closer this time”
When the race started, the roar of the crowd added to the adrenaline flow. Everyone was on their feet knowing the outcome of the meet came down to this race. The Boardman Boys raced for themselves and their team. They hung in there until the end and got touched out by less than a second. These boys (Herrmann, DunLany, Amendol, and Satterfield) did amazing all meet. “If we had a bulletin board, this would be our motivational material. We will see Wooster one more time at the NEAC Championships in early January. This gives us a little more time to get faster.”
First place relays for the Spartans include: 1-Meter Diving with members RJ Keating and Vince Tran (288.05). This score set the new diving relay mark since the conference went to a new 5 dive set instead of a 3. 200 Medley Relay with Caleb Satterfield, Ben Herrmann, Samuel DiSttefano, and Ethan DunLany (1:43.90), 200 Butterfly Relay with Grant Parker, Mason Prosser, Samuel DiStefano, Matthew Amendol (1:48.58), and the 400 IM Relay (Ben Herrmann, Ethan DunLany, Mason Prosser, and Caleb Satterfield (3:54.63).

Coaches Chelsea DeAngelo and Mark Brooks have been challenging them in the weight room and in the water,” stated Coach Cordon. “Not only do we have talented upperclassmen, but our freshmen and sophomores contributed today in challenging new events. Even though we fell short, this gives us all the motivation we need for what we like to call the “chase.” We will have another shot at this during our Conference Championships.”
