Self-Reflection
2025-26 Academic Year
2025-26 Academic Year
Reflecting on my experience as I complete my fourth year at Bishop Montgomery High School, I am continually challenged and motivated by the dynamic nature of my work—even after more than 30 years in education. Balancing my responsibilities teaching Honors American Literature, Honors British Literature, Ethical Health, Speech & Debate, and ACE, while serving as advisor of the Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (ACE) Team and head coach and mentor of our Robotics Team, RoboKnights 5285, has deepened my understanding of what it means to be an educator, mentor, and leader within a school community. In addition, I have taken on voluntary leadership roles in campus safety and security, collaborated on new initiatives such as our emerging broadcasting project, and supported fundraising efforts with the golf committee. These experiences have allowed me to contribute meaningfully beyond the classroom while continuing to grow professionally. I am also proud that my course proposals have been approved by the UC Regents for A–G elective credit, expanding opportunities for our students and strengthening our academic offerings.
Formation, Growth, and Continuation of the ACE Team & ACE Course Elective
The continued growth of the ACE Team remains one of the most rewarding aspects of my career. What began as a new initiative has developed into a thriving program that connects students with professionals in architecture, construction, and engineering. Through hands-on design challenges, site visits, and mentorship, students are gaining real-world experience that expands their understanding of possible career paths. As the program matures, I am focused on maintaining its momentum and on refining its structure to ensure sustainability and continued student engagement.
An important area of development within the ACE class has been the integration of cybersecurity concepts as part of a broader “cyber engineering” focus. By incorporating elements of AP-level cybersecurity literacy and analytical thinking, students are introduced to the digital infrastructure that underpins modern architecture and engineering systems. This interdisciplinary approach helps students understand physical design, and the importance of protecting data, systems, and networks in an increasingly connected world. Expanding the ACE class in this direction has strengthened its relevance and aligns with emerging industry needs.
Managing and growing the ACE Team has required careful coordination, strong partnerships, and a commitment to experiential learning. It has reinforced my belief that education is most impactful when students can apply their knowledge in authentic contexts. Watching students develop confidence, collaboration skills, and professional awareness continues to inspire my work.
Robotics Leadership and Mentorship
Serving as the head coach and mentor of RoboKnights 5285 has added another meaningful dimension to my role. This position allows me to guide students in STEM-based problem solving, teamwork, and innovation, while also fostering leadership and resilience. Like ACE, robotics provides students with hands-on, project-based learning experiences, but it also introduces the challenges of competition, time management, and technical collaboration.
Mentoring students through the build season and competitions has strengthened my ability to support diverse learners in high-pressure, goal-oriented environments. It has also deepened my commitment to creating opportunities where students can discover their strengths and grow through both success and failure.
Teaching and Curriculum Development
Teaching across multiple disciplines—Honors American Literature, Honors British Literature, Ethical Health, Speech & Debate, and ACE—continues to challenge me to refine my instructional strategies and maintain high levels of engagement. With students bringing a wide range of abilities, perspectives, and needs, I strive to create inclusive, rigorous, and meaningful learning environments in each course.
A key focus has been maintaining continuity and ensuring a seamless transition from one course preparation to the next. I am intentional about aligning skills across courses—particularly in writing, critical thinking, and communication—so that students experience consistent growth throughout their academic journey. I am also constantly evaluating and refining my curriculum to improve pacing, relevance, and engagement.
One of my proudest accomplishments has been the development of new courses that were successfully approved by the UC Regents for A–G elective credit. This process required careful planning, alignment with university standards, and a commitment to academic rigor. It has strengthened our school’s academic offerings while providing students with valuable, college-recognized coursework.
Leadership, Collaboration, and Community Engagement
Beyond the classroom, I have actively sought opportunities to contribute to the broader school community. I have taken on voluntary leadership roles related to campus safety and security, recognizing the importance of maintaining a safe and supportive environment for students and staff.
Additionally, I collaborate with Mr. Haynes, our video production teacher and broadcasting advisor, on the development of a new morning broadcasting project. This initiative has the potential to enhance student voice, creativity, and communication while building a stronger sense of community on campus.
I have also contributed to fundraising efforts as part of the golf committee under Andy Marifino, supporting initiatives that benefit our programs and students. These collaborative efforts have reinforced the importance of teamwork and shared responsibility in building a vibrant school culture.
Understanding and Contributing to School Culture
As I continue to grow within the Bishop Montgomery community, I remain committed to understanding and contributing to its culture and mission. The school’s emphasis on Catholic values has shaped my approach to teaching, encouraging me to focus not only on academic development but also on moral and personal growth.
Through daily interactions, extracurricular involvement, and ongoing reflection, I strive to build meaningful relationships with students. Listening to their experiences and perspectives allows me to teach with greater empathy and relevance, while also helping to foster a classroom environment rooted in respect and engagement.
Areas for Growth and Ongoing Commitment
While my experiences have been deeply rewarding, I recognize the importance of continued growth. Managing multiple responsibilities—including teaching, advising, coaching, and leadership roles—requires ongoing reflection and adjustment. I aim to improve my ability to balance these commitments effectively, including delegating when appropriate and seeking collaboration with colleagues.
I am also committed to continuously improving our academic programs and strengthening connections between classroom learning and real-world application. Expanding interdisciplinary opportunities—such as the integration of cybersecurity into ACE—will remain a focus as I continue to evolve my teaching and program development.
Conclusion
My experience at Bishop Montgomery has been both fulfilling and humbling. Each role I have taken on—from teaching and advising to coaching and community involvement—has reinforced my belief in the transformative power of education. I remain dedicated to refining my practice, supporting student growth, and contributing positively to our school community.
As I look ahead, I am committed to continued improvement, fostering innovation in our programs, and ensuring that every student has the opportunity to succeed academically, grow personally, and feel connected to our community.
