Bishop Montgomery High School
As I complete my fourth year at Bishop Montgomery High School and reflect on my more than 30 years in education, I continue to be energized by the evolving demands of teaching, mentoring, and leadership. My work teaching Honors American Literature, Honors British Literature, Ethical Health, Speech & Debate, and ACE, along with advising the ACE Team, serving as head coach of RoboKnights 5285, and contributing to campus-wide initiatives, has strengthened my commitment to educating the whole student in alignment with our Catholic mission. The approval of my course proposals by the UC Regents for A–G elective credit further reflects my dedication to rigorous, relevant curriculum development.
Standard 1: Instructional Planning for Student Learning
I design curriculum that is rigorous, relevant, and aligned across multiple courses, ensuring continuity and a seamless transition from one course preparation to the next. In my English courses, I emphasize analytical writing, critical thinking, and communication skills, while in ACE, I provide project-based, experiential learning opportunities.
A significant area of growth has been the development and implementation of courses that received UC A–G approval, ensuring alignment with university expectations and academic standards. Additionally, I have expanded the ACE curriculum to include cyber engineering through cybersecurity integration, introducing students to AP-level analytical thinking related to digital systems and infrastructure. This interdisciplinary approach reflects current industry trends and enhances student preparedness.
Standard 2: Effective Instructional Delivery
Across all courses, I employ varied instructional strategies to engage diverse learners, including structured discussions, peer collaboration, writing workshops, and project-based learning. In classes with large enrollments, I prioritize creating an inclusive environment where students feel supported and challenged.
In both ACE and Robotics, I facilitate hands-on learning experiences that require students to apply knowledge in real-world contexts. These environments promote problem-solving, collaboration, and resilience. My role as a mentor in these programs allows me to guide students through both academic and experiential challenges, reinforcing learning beyond the traditional classroom.
Standard 3: Assessment of Student Learning
I utilize both formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and inform instruction. In my English courses, I place particular emphasis on writing as a tool for assessment, providing structured opportunities for revision and reflection.
Through writing workshops and targeted feedback, students demonstrate measurable growth in analytical and communication skills. I continue to refine my assessment practices to balance efficiency with meaningful, individualized feedback, particularly in large classes.
Standard 4: Learning Environment
I strive to create a classroom and program environment rooted in respect, engagement, and inclusivity. Building strong relationships with students is central to this goal. By listening to students and understanding their diverse backgrounds, I am better able to respond to their needs and foster a positive learning atmosphere.
Beyond the classroom, I have taken on voluntary leadership roles in campus safety and security, contributing to a safe and supportive environment for the entire school community. My involvement in extracurricular programs such as ACE and Robotics further strengthens student connection and engagement.
Standard 5: Catholic Identity and Mission
As a member of the Bishop Montgomery community, I am committed to integrating the school’s Catholic values into my teaching and interactions with students. This includes fostering respect, ethical decision-making, and a sense of responsibility toward others.
Courses such as Ethical Health and Speech & Debate provide natural opportunities to explore moral reasoning, communication, and personal responsibility. Through all of my roles, I aim to support students’ academic, personal, and spiritual growth in alignment with the school’s mission.
Standard 6: Communication and Collaboration
Collaboration is central to my work. I have built strong partnerships with professionals through the ACE Team, providing students with real-world connections and mentorship opportunities. I also collaborate with colleagues across disciplines to strengthen programs and initiatives.
Notably, I have worked with Mr. Haynes, our video production teacher and broadcasting advisor, to support the development of a new broadcasting project aimed at enhancing student voice and community engagement. Additionally, I contribute to the golf committee fundraising efforts under Andy Marifino, supporting school programs and initiatives.
These experiences reflect my commitment to building a collaborative school culture that benefits students and the broader community.
Standard 7: Professional Growth
Throughout my career, and especially during my time at Bishop Montgomery, I have remained committed to continuous improvement. Taking on new roles—including robotics coaching, cybersecurity integration in ACE, and leadership in campus initiatives—has pushed me to grow professionally and adapt to new challenges.
I continue to reflect on my practice, seeking ways to improve time management, balance responsibilities, and enhance instructional effectiveness. I am particularly focused on expanding interdisciplinary learning opportunities and incorporating culturally responsive teaching strategies.
Conclusion
My experience at Bishop Montgomery has been both fulfilling and transformative. Through my work in the classroom, my leadership in ACE and Robotics, and my contributions to the broader school community, I have remained committed to supporting student growth and upholding the school’s mission.
As I move forward, I will continue to refine my instructional practices, expand innovative programs, and strengthen my contributions to both the academic and spiritual development of our students. My goal remains to provide meaningful, engaging, and impactful educational experiences that prepare students for success in college, career, and life.
