Video Lectures & Presentations
4-Steps to Creating Video Lectures and Presentations
By following the four simple steps outlined below, you can easily create video lectures and presentations, and share them with your students.
Step 1: Review Slides
Review the following slides to get information about video in the classroom as well as strategies for creating great video lectures and presentations.
Step 2: Record Video Lecture
Below you will find a few strategies on how to record video lectures. We recommend you either choose a tool you are already familiar with, or start with the most basic one.
Zoom
Record your video using the Zoom 'Record' feature. If you have a pro account, you can save to the Zoom cloud and share link with your students or post in Blackboard.
You can also record your lectures using the Blackboard Collaborate tool. You'll have the option to allow others to download the video or you can share a link by:
Go to your Recordings page.
Find the recording you want to share and open the Recording options menu.
Select Copy Link.
Share the public link with anybody.
Phone or Tablet
Use the camera on your smart phone or tablet to record a video. Share the video file using one of the options below. This is the simplest option for sharing a video featuring you, the professor.
VoiceThread
VoiceThread is a learning tool for enhancing student engagement and online presence. Instructors and/or students can create, share, and comment on images, Microsoft PowerPoint presentations, videos, audio files, documents, and PDFs, using microphone, webcam, text, phone, and audio-file upload. VoiceThread is integrated into Blackboard, so you can easily add content and assignments that your students can access without any additional sign in.
Loom Free Video and Screen Recording
Phone/tablet. Use the camera on your smart phone or tablet to record a video. Share the video file using one of the options below. This is the simplest option for sharing a video featuring you, the professor.
Here's a video with our own Prof. R. Shane Snipes working with Loom.
Screencast-O-Matic
Screencast-O-matic allows for free recording of your webcam, computer audio, and screen. When you opt to "Start recording for free," you will be taken to download the recording software. Watch the video tutorial to the right for instructions on using the free recorder. When you finish recording, download your file and then move on to sharing options on this page below.
Step 3: Post and Share Your Video
Once you have recorded a video, you must 'post it' somewhere so that you can share with your students. We highly recommend you post on YouTube because it automatically close captions the video for you. This helps with accessibility and with ESL/EFL students.
YouTube
Upload your video to YouTube using a Google account. Opt for "unlisted" if you wish to keep your video from being searchable. Share the link to the video with your students.
Google Drive
Upload your video to Google Drive using a Google account. Share the file, or even an entire folder, and send the share link to your students.
Zoom recording management allows account owners and admins to manage their users' cloud recordings, including sharing the video.
Dropbox
Upload your video to your CUNY Dropbox and share a link to the file/folder.
Step 4: Add Video Link to Blackboard
Now that you have a video and it's captioned for equity and accessibility, it's time to add the link to your Blackboard course.
Add a YouTube Video to Your Blackboard Course
Copying the embed link from YouTube and adding to your Blackboard course module is pretty simple. A picture is worth a thousand words, so watch this video to learn how!
Create Video Presentations
There are various ways to create video presentations using PowerPoint or Google slides. You can also use any document, image, or PDF. Below you will find just a few strategies to get you going. Post video presentations the same way you post lectures.
Use PowerPoint to create more engaging presentations by adding audio, uploading the YouTube and sharing with your students or posting on Blackboard. Unfortunately, Mac computers don't yet allow you to export video from PowerPoint.
