All of us Leopard Gecko owners want the best for our little friends! In order to have a happy, healthy gecko, we have to look for the signs of when they aren't so happy and healthy. Below, you will find some examples of common Leopard Gecko diseases and illnesses.
This gecko suffers from a common disease, Metabolic Bone Disease. This is usually caused by lack of calcium, causing the bones to be very weak and frail. An easy way to spot this is with weak, twisted or bent limbs, a spine that always seems bent, or your gecko not being able to lift themselves up off the ground.
This gecko suffers from an internal problem called impaction. This comes from the gecko eating something semi-edible or not edible at all. It results in a blocked digestive system, or clogged stool. An easy way to spot this is by looking at the under belly of you leopard gecko, and look for dark spots, bruising, or bloating. Also look for unusual feces.
This gecko suffers from an external infection called Mouth Rot. This is usually caused by high amounts of stress in the gecko. When a gecko is stressed, their immune system is weakened, letting bacteria swarm in. Without a strong immune system, it causes an infection in the mouth. An easy way to spot this is blackened or darkened gums and teeth.
This gecko suffers from an internal problem called egg-binding. This is caused by incorrect amounts of humidity, stress, not enough calcium, incorrect lighting/temperature, and sometimes malnutrition. An easy way to spot this is by looking at the under bell of your leopard gecko. Look for common eggs that have been bound together, and bruised circles.
