Lines
Vertical lines- Lines that lead the eyes up and down. gives the illusion of more height and less width. give a felling of strength, dignity, and formailty.
Horizontal lines- lines that lead the eyes from side to side. gives the illision of width rather then height. create a feeling of stability and restfulness.
Curved- lines that easily move the eyes from one point to the next. Give a feeling of calmness and grace.
Diagonal- Lines that creat a dramatic look. give feelings of action and movement.
Shape
Square/Rectangle- provide sense of unity and stability, easy to work with, may be arranged to conserve space.
Triangle- provides a dramatic and artistic look to a space.
Circles- are constant, unifying, and pleasing.
Space
Positive spaces- the space that is occupied by objects, materials, furniture etc.
Negative space- the empty space between two pieces of furniture.
Texture- discribes the way an object looks and feels. can not only be felt but seen. it is important to have a good balance of different textures in your space.
Not enough textures- make people feel anxious
Too much texture- makes people feel overwhelmed.
Pattern- when the element of design are brought togther on fabric. types: florals, geometric, shapes, lines etc.
Large pattern- emphaize the area being used made to stand out and be noticed.
Small pattern- decreases the perceived size. adds to the design without drawing the eye toward it.
