Class Overviews
English III
High School English III focuses on American literature and critical reading, writing, and analysis skills, guiding students through major themes, historical contexts, and literary techniques. Central to the course are classic texts like Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, which explores friendship, dreams, and social marginalization during the Great Depression; The Crucible by Arthur Miller, a gripping allegory of McCarthyism set against the Salem witch trials, highlighting hysteria and integrity; and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, a vivid portrait of the Jazz Age and the elusive American Dream. Through these works, students engage in close reading, discuss complex characters and symbols, and write analytical and reflective essays that deepen their understanding of literature and its connections to American history and culture. As with any ELA course, we will be reading, writing, discussing, and improving our skills in grammar and argumentation each day. Teaching as a Profession (TAP)
A high school pathway in Teaching as a Profession introduces students to the fundamentals of education and prepares them for careers in teaching or related fields. The series typically begins with an introductory course covering educational history, philosophies, and the roles and responsibilities of teachers. Students then advance to exploring instructional strategies, lesson planning, and classroom management techniques while gaining insights into child and adolescent development. Higher-level courses often include hands-on experiences, such as classroom observations, internships, or teaching practicums, allowing students to apply their skills in real educational settings. Throughout the program, students develop essential communication, leadership, and organizational skills, and often have opportunities to earn certifications or college credits, setting a strong foundation for future studies in education or entry-level positions in schools or childcare environments.
