A unique and innovative course designed to provide students with the understanding of how business impacts and is influenced by a global economy in the 21st century. This course is designed to strengthen students’ skills across the curriculum with the activities associated with business finance.
Emphasis is placed on the areas of the economy, business organization, human resources, marketing, finance, accounting, along with the impact of technology on all of these areas. Legal, ethical and social obligations of a business will be explored. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of financial business procedures and issues emerging in today’s global economy
This course is an introduction to social media studies and explores implications, opportunities and challenges for the business profession. It explores the ways social media have had an impact on various aspects of business.
This course explores current issues in the rapidly changing arena of social media and the impact is has on businesses. It allows students to use skills such as reading, writing, math, and science to resolve social media questions. Using management skills and research groups, students develop a set of skills for adapting to the continuing evolution of integrated social media experiences for businesses. Students examine ways businesses use social media to leverage and brand themselves as well as the damage that social media can do.
This course has been designed to prepare students for success in this rapidly changing, technologically-driven, globally competitive world by focusing on personal finance and economics.
Basic knowledge of the theoretical with practical, real-life decisions about employment options, consumer choices, and business and personal finance will provide an understanding of basic economic concepts and principles to help students to become better informed and more active citizens.
Sports and Entertainment Marketing is a unique and innovative course designed for students with an interest in the sports and entertainment industry. This course stresses the utilization of fundamental marketing concepts and will include an orientation to the sports and entertainment industry. Marketing strategies along with topics in sponsorship, pricing, marketing research, endorsements, and promotions will be part of this course.
Sports and entertainment industry is a major component in the field of business and marketing. The industry is all around us -not just at ballparks and theaters, but at schools, on television, radio, in stores and on the Internet. This course will emphasize the importance of the industry and the role it plays in our society. Students will explore both the sports industry and entertainment industry, focusing on real world business perspectives. The course is designed to be project based, using the Internet on a daily basis. Students will participate in cooperative groups and elaborate using higher order thinking and presentation skills. As the sports and entertainment industry continues to grow technologically, the course will address these growing trends as they evolve.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment growth for accountants is expected to increase 11 percent or more from 2014 to 2024. Accountants who have a professional certification, especially CPAs, should have the best prospects (http://www.bls.gov/ooh/business-andfinancial/mobile/accountant-and-auditors.htm). Accounting classes at the high school level give students an introduction to this field and a head start toward a successful career in accounting or other business careers.
The CPA Accounting course is a rigorous year long course in accounting where students learn to recognize financial events and analyze their results. Students will develop a business vocabulary; learn current accounting principles, practices and procedures; and apply the knowledge to record, communicate and evaluate financial information. This course is created for those students preparing for college or work in business management or business administration. It is especially needed for those students interested in a business career in the field of accounting. It is also a useful course for those who wish to work in the office-skills-related fields and for those who are considering operating their own businesses.
Entrepreneurship is a yearlong course that delivers the tools, skills, and judgment that students need for a long and meaningful life as an entrepreneur. The journey of the Entrepreneurship course takes students on an adventure, from evaluating an opportunity, to launching a business, through growing it, and to harvesting the profits. The students learn the process of starting a business with emphasis on topics such as risk-taking, money investment and resource analysis. The nature of the topics allow for interdisciplinary studies in development of marketing and graphics for business start-ups. By experiencing the trials at each stage of starting, building, and running an entrepreneurial venture, students will be better prepared for their own entrepreneurial journey.
One of the strengths of the Entrepreneurship course is its focus on bridging the gap between theory and practice. Student-centered activities include the review of the Wall Street Journal, presentations by local entrepreneurs, blogging on business ventures and the culminating activity of creating a business plan. Entrepreneurship is offered as part of the BHS Perkins Program for business careers In conjunction with the other core Business Technology Department courses and the Virtual High School business course offerings.
The 11th Grade SLE unpaid internship is offered to college prep, honors or AP students who are at least 16 years old. They have the opportunity to intern in a variety of settings that include local hospitals, doctor's offices, lawyer's offices, the prosecutor's office and local businesses.
Schedules depend on the program selected, but offers potential partial day option (4 days a week/1 period per day) or an after school option (1-5 days a week/3-5 pm). The number of credits awarded are prorated with the hours at the mentor site.
The 12th Grade SLE unpaid internship is offered to students who are at least 16 years old and have completed 100 credits toward graduation. They have the opportunity to intern in a variety of settings that include local hospitals, doctor's offices, lawyer's offices, travel agencies and local businesses.
Schedules depend on the program selected, but offers potential partial day option (4 days a week/1 period per day) or an after school option (1-5 days a week/3-5 pm). The number of credits awarded are prorated with the hours at the mentor site.
Cooperative Education Experience is a paid structured learning experience in which students who are enrolled in an approved career and technical education program are placed into employment which is appropriate for the approved career and technical education program, and through written cooperative arrangements between a school and employers, students receive instruction, including required academic courses and approved programs, by alternation of study in school and at the employment site. The Cooperative Education program employment is at paid worksites.
Broadly, career and technical education must ready students to be educated, prepared, and adaptable in the workplace and in the community to effectively address the common challenges that businesses, other employers, and society as a whole face now and will increasingly face in the future. In this regard, the Cooperative Education Curriculum for CHOE, CBE, CTE and CHE offer collaboration between the district and the community. The program ensures access and equity in opportunities for all students who are eligible for participation. The criteria for participation are outlined in the BHS Course Catalog and it is limited to 12th grade students. Completion of the Cooperative Education experience includes successful completion of the scheduled class sessions and successful completion of the conditions of employment as detailed in the student learning plan.
Cooperative Business Education (CBE)
This work experience program includes a class and employment in clerical, secretarial, banking, marketing, retail, real estate or management fields within the community.
Cooperative Home Economics Education (CHE)
This work experience program includes a class and employment in childhood education, interior design, floral design, fashion, food preparation and restaurant management.
Cooperative Health Occupations Education (CHOE)
This work experience program includes a class and employment in the health care field. Work options include dental assisting, medical records, nursing, physical therapy and lab technician.
Cooperative Technology Education (CTE)
This work experience program includes a class and employment in a technical career area. Work options include graphics/design, electronics, computer technology, automotive, carpentry, building trades, air conditioning and refrigeration.
