All courses in the department are sequential, full year courses in which communicative skills as well as the cultural aspects of the target country and its people are emphasized. Language instruction will focus on the interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes of communication. Using this approach, students will be able to interpret and understand spoken and written language, participate in direct oral and written communication, and make presentations in the target language.

20110113 SPANISH 1 CP
(9-11) 5 CR. PREREQUISITE: NONE.
The overall goal of this course is to develop the student’s ability to understand, speak, read, and write in Spanish by using the three communicative language modes. In order to foster meaningful communication, the fundamentals of pronunciation, aural comprehension, oral expression, vocabulary, grammar and composition are provided. Opportunities to learn about and explore the culture of Spanish speaking countries are also emphasized throughout this course.
20110114 SPANISH 1 HONORS
(9-11) 5 CR. PREREQUISITE: TEACHER RECOMMENDATION.
This accelerated course focuses on Spanish culture and the skills/knowledge needed for basic communication in Spanish. This novice level course provides the necessary fundamentals of vocabulary and grammar to develop students’ ability to understand, speak read, and write the language better.
20110116 SPANISH 1 NATIVE SPEAKERS HONORS
(9-10) 5 CR. PREREQUISITE: WRITING ASSESSMENT, RECOMMENDATION.
This course is designed to meet the needs of students who are heritage speakers and want to develop their literacy skills. The course is focused on Reading and Writing, and students will read selected novels and poetry in Spanish. Enrollment is determined by testing through the World Language Department.
20110123 SPANISH 2 CP
(10-12) 5 CR. PREREQUISITE: SPANISH 1 CP.
The objectives of this course are to continue to develop the student’s ability to communicate in Spanish both orally and in writing and to increase the student’s appreciation of the culture of the Spanish speaking countries studied. Using the three modes of communication, the interpretive, the interpersonal, and the presentational modes, the student will be able to understand, converse, interact, and present written and oral products in Spanish at a more difficult level.

(10-12) 5 CR. PREREQUISITE: SPANISH 1 HONORS OR EQUIVALENT, TEACHER RECOMMENDATION.
This accelerated course stresses the active participation of the students in the acquisition of meaningful communication. The goal is to increase the student’s ability to understand, speak, read, and write Spanish. Fundamentals of grammar are expanded and culture is infused throughout each lesson. Students will participate in activities which focus on the interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational modes of communication.
20110126 SPANISH 2 NATIVE SPEAKERS HONORS
(10-12) 5 CR. PREREQUISITE: SPANISH 1 NATIVE SPEAKERS HONORS.
The SPANISH 2 NATIVE SPEAKERS course is designed for students who have had formal training in the Spanish 1 Native Speakers course. The Native Speakers track is designed to provide students with the necessary tools to enhance their verbal, reading, and writing skills in Spanish. This course will focus on the development of literacy via the cultural and geographical focus of Caribbean novels, poems, and writers. It is designed to give students a part of this rich literary tapestry, to encourage the deeper, more literary study of their language, and to embrace all that it means to be bilingual in the United States.

(10-12) 5 CR. PREREQUISITE: SPANISH 2 FINAL GRADE OF 80 OR HIGHER; APPLICATION AND FEE REQUIRED.
SPANISH 3 HPA continues to emphasize the three modes of communication: interpretive, interpersonal and presentational. Increased competency in oral and written fluency is demonstrated by the development of vocabulary, and the use of idiomatic Spanish. Reading literature and writing compositions provide the synthesis and expansion for command of the language, and knowledge of Latin American culture. Students who elect this class are eligible for college credit upon successful completion of the course, and successful performance on an exam administered through the world language department of Stockton University.

(11-12) 5 CR. PREREQUISITE: SPANISH 3 HPA FINAL GRADE OF 80 OR HIGHER; APPLICATION AND FEE REQUIRED.
SPANISH 4 HPA students continue to develop the interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes of communication with a greater degree of proficiency. With emphasis on the leading personalities and outstanding events in Spanish history, the fourth year demands increased listening comprehension and fluency of both oral and written expression. Essential grammar points are reviewed as they refer to assigned readings. Students who elect this class are eligible for additional college credit upon successful completion of the course, and successful performance on an exam administered through the world language department of Stockton University.
20110150 AP SPANISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE
(11-12) 5 CR. PREREQUISITE: TEACHER RECOMMENDATION.
The AP Spanish Literature and Culture course uses a thematic approach to introduce students to representative texts (short stories, novels, poetry, and essays) from Peninsular Spanish, Latin American, and United States Hispanic literature. Literature is examined within the context of its time and place, as students reflect on the many voices and cultures present in the required readings. The course also includes a strong focus on cultural connections and comparisons, including exploration of various media (e.g., art, film, articles, and literary criticism).
20110213 ITALIAN 1 CP
(9-11) 5 CR. PREREQUISITE: ENROLLMENT ENGLISH CP.
The focus of this course is to develop the ability to communicate in Italian using the interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes of communication. This beginning level course provides the necessary fundamentals of vocabulary and grammar to develop the student’s ability to understand, speak, read and write in Italian. The study of the Italian culture is an important element of this course.

(10-12) 5 CR. PREREQUISITE: ITALIAN 1 CP.
The objective of this course is to develop the student’s ability to communicate in the three communication modes: interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational. The student will be able to understand, to converse, to interact, and to make presentations in Italian on a more difficult level through the introduction of new grammar and vocabulary. The study of Italian culture and civilization continues throughout the course.

Development of the three modes of communication continues as students gain oral and written fluency and an increased knowledge and appreciation of Italian culture. Italian syntax is reviewed and expanded; building vocabulary continues and emphasis is placed on developing skills in the use of idiomatic Italian.

The leading personalities and events of Italian history are a basis for development and usage of increased vocabulary and composition writing. Reading is extensive, and listening comprehension, as well as speaking, are integral parts of the fourth year. Students continue to master the interpretive, interpersonal and presentational modes of communication in Italian 4.

This course focuses on the development of the ability to communicate in French using the three modes of communication: the interpretive, the interpersonal, and the presentational. The aim is to develop the student’s ability to understand, speak, read and write French. An introduction to the culture of the francophone world is also included.

The third year is one of synthesis and expansion of the three modes of communication. Objectives include oral and written fluency, an increased awareness and appreciation for French culture, and the review and development of grammar skills which foster greater use of idiomatic French. Students are expected to produce short compositions and make oral presentations.
20110344 FRENCH 4 HONORS
(11, 12) 5 CR. PREREQUISITE: FRENCH 3 HONORS FINAL GRADE OF 80 OR HIGHER.
Students at this level continue to master the modes of communication using the French language. Literary and expository texts, authentic print materials, poems and short stories are read, discussed and evaluated both orally and in writing. Essential grammar points will be reviewed with an emphasis on idioms, pronouns, and verb tenses.
