The Social Science Department at Bloomfield High School offers a variety of courses, making us a truly comprehensive department. Our goal is to expose students to a range of topics, hoping to encourage an appreciation of the many issues that impact their lives. Through introspection, a cultivation of empathy, analysis, and evaluation, students will develop the skills necessary to succeed as productive citizens in society.

A required course for graduation, WORLD HISTORY CP stresses the cause and effect relationship of those events and people that have shaped modern history.
20070114 WORLD HISTORY HONORS
(9) 5 CR. PREREQUISITE: GRADE OF 85 OR HIGHER IN 8TH GRADE HISTORY HONORS OR PARTICIPATION IN THE G&T PROGRAM WITH TEACHER RECOMMENDATION.
This course meets a state requirement in history. It is predicated on an analysis of interdependent systems throughout history: ecological, political, economic, social, and cultural. Research and writing are key elements for the study and comparisons of past civilizations, their rise and fall, and current world events.
20070213 U.S. HISTORY 1 CP
(10) 5 CR. PREREQUISITE: WORLD HISTORY.
Required for graduation, U.S. HISTORY 1 is predicated on inquiry and analysis that answer the “whys” in the history of the United States from the Age of Discovery to Westward Expansion. The impact of cultural diversity, the creation of government, and an emergence of global power are studied.

U.S. HISTORY 1 is predicated on inquiry and analysis that answer the “whys” in the history of the United States from Colonial and Revolutionary America to Westward Expansion to the Civil War and Reconstruction. Research and writing are key elements for the study and comparisons of United States history.
20070215 AP U.S. HISTORY 1
(10) 5 CR. PREREQUISITE: GRADE OF 85 OR HIGHER IN WORLD HISTORY HONORS.
U.S. HISTORY 1 is the first part of a two year program which prepares the student for the AP exam. The course demands college level research, analysis, and writing to develop a knowledge and understanding of the history of the United States from pre Columbian history through 1880.

A study of the United States from 1880 through the present, Advanced Placement History requires analysis, research, and preparation for the AP exam. Included are core content standards which mandate an examination of economics and its effect on national and international politics.

20071315 AP COMPARATIVE GOVERNMENT
(12) 5 CR. PREREQUISITE: U.S. History 2 HONORS, TEACHER RECOMMENDATION.
This course uses a comparative global approach to measure the politics, economics, and societies of Great Britain, Russia, China, Mexico, Iran, and Nigeria. Critical thinking and analysis are major components of the course.
20070713 ANTHROPOLOGY CP
(11, 12) 2.5 CR. PREREQUISITE: NONE.
ANTHROPOLOGY is an integration of the physical and social sciences: a study of the evolution of man. A basis for research and dialog in the class is the dialectic of culture, religion, and nationality. Research is a key component through contrasting the similarities and differences between and among cultures.
20070913 CRIMINAL JUSTICE CP
(11, 12) 5 CR. PREREQUISITE: NONE.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE is a course designed to prepare the student for entry to a college major in criminal justice. The course includes a study of the criminal justice system, participation in mock trials, analysis of the United States Constitution and the NJ Criminal Code. A research paper is required.

(11, 12) 2.5 CR. PREREQUISITE: NONE.
A semester course, ECONOMICS is a study of systems affecting people and government. Production, consumption, distribution, and fiscal policy are researched for analysis and discussion. Students are expected to show understanding of banking, inflation, the Federal Reserve Board, global trade and taxation. This course can fulfill the Financial Literacy requirement for graduation.
20071713 HISTORY THROUGH FILM (1920-PRESENT) CP
(12) 2.5 CR. PREREQUISITE: U.S. HISTORY 1, 2.
HISTORY THROUGH FILM is an application of an understanding of American history through societal perceptions, influenced by the media. Film, newspaper, and music will be used as the foundation. Students will be challenged to analyze, synthesize, and predict as they research the historical climate of the times.
20070411 HOLOCAUST AND GENOCIDE
(11,12) 2.5 CR. PREREQUISITE: NONE.
The goals of this course will be to allow students who have completed the core courses to use their knowledge to better appreciate and empathize with the Holocaust and Genocides that have occurred. Students employ their historical understanding of these events to begin to analyze reasons why each was allowed to happen.
20071314 HUMAN BEHAVIOR CP
(11, 12) 5 CR. PREREQUISITE: NONE.
HUMAN BEHAVIOR is a course that attempts to explain the how and why of everyday human action. The class follows a curriculum designed to develop a foundation in the field of psychology, looking into how we learn and develop, different types of personalities we can possess, and the various mental disorders that exist. It is a course that fosters various skills, such as reading, writing, research, and critical thinking.
20071521, 20071531 LEADERSHIP 11, LEADERSHIP 12
(11, 12) 5 CR. PREREQUISITE: TEACHER RECOMMENDATION.
This course will help students combine the skills required for and knowledge of different subjects and disciplines to solve problems, make decisions, create personal meaning, and present findings beyond the scope of a single subject or discipline. Through individual and collaborative inquiry and research, students will analyze the connections among diverse subjects and disciplines; develop information literacy skills in analyzing, selecting, evaluating, and communicating information; and become aware of a variety of resources and viewpoints on contemporary issues.

A semester elective, POLITICAL SCIENCE provides an analysis of contemporary political systems in the United States and other countries. Traditional political theory, global and local politics, civil liberties, political systems and parties are researched for analysis, review and discussion.

(12) 2.5 CR. PREREQUISITE: US 1 AND US 2.
From Reconstruction through the World Wars, the Civil Rights Era, and the 21st century, students will explore the personalities, experiences, and contributions of Black and Latino people in the modern history of the US.
