Teachers make course recommendations based on a variety of criteria including grade in the current course, work ethic, and interest in the course. It is recommended that a student seeking to move from College Prep to Honors level course(s) should conference with their teacher and demonstrate a level of mastery in the subject matter.
In order to continue enrollment in the Honors level in a subject area when selecting his or her schedule for the following academic year, teachers will use a variety of criteria to determine if a student will continue to be successful if they remain in the successive Honors level course.
Important:
Please remember that recommendations are made by teachers who are only considering current performance in a similar subject and do not take into account the number of Honors or AP courses for which the student may be recommended. If a student feels that they are capable of moving up a level (i.e. CP to Honors), the Course Waiver Request Form must be signed by the parent and the student will have to meet with the related content area supervisor and the Assistant Principal in charge of Scheduling, Mr. Cappello.
For each additional Honors or AP course added to a student’s schedule, both the rigor and time commitment will increase. Parents and students should consider extracurricular activities and other responsibilities prior to course selection. Please be mindful and have conversations with your child's counselor if you have a concern about how adding too many Honors or AP courses may impact your child’s well-being.
