Internal changes, coupled with the challenges of the outside world, reinforce the goal of middle school counselors to teach students skills to help them through this difficult stage of life and to use these skills on a daily basis. To accomplish this, middle school counselors provide and carry out a comprehensive counseling program that focuses on the uniqueness of students in three areas of development — academic, career, and personal/social.
Here are some reasons students might want to utilize student services:
"I had an argument with my best friend and she doesn't want to be my friend anymore."
"I'm not sure what I need, but what I'm doing isn't working."
"My grandfather is really sick and I'm scared he's going to die."
"I'm so overwhelmed, I just need some time and space."
"My mom just had a baby and now I feel so alone."
"I'm new to the middle school, can you help me?"
"I'm having a hard time sitting still in my class, what do I do?"
"My parents argue all the time and I don't know what to do."
"My dad wants me to be an engineer like him, but I want to be a pilot."
Here are some reasons parents might want to utilize student services:
"This is John's third school this year, and he's having difficulty adjusting."
"My husband is being deployed in two weeks and Carolyn may need some help coping with this change."
"Sam used to be excited about school, but lately he doesn't seem to care."
"My wife and I recently separated and our daughter could use some help understanding this."
"My son seems to be the target of some teasing and bullying. Can you help?"
"We are having some financial difficulties and are needing some financial support."
It can be very helpful to understand the developmental milestones your child may be experiencing as they continue to grow from early adolescence, on.
The book to the right is a phenomenal resource for families to use if you would like to get some insight as to what is developmentally normal for that age, and how to navigate the in's and out's of that age.
