English 9 is the required English class for ninth grade students not in Honors English 9. Students should expect stricter, more advanced academic requirements than he/she found in previous English classes. Literature study will include understanding, enjoying and analyzing the short story, non-fiction, the novel, poetry and drama. The students will also work on vocabulary, communication and writing development. The students will develop their research skills and study skills, test-taking skills and listening and speaking skills. Each student is required to complete a research paper.

English 11 is the American Literature and Composition class for the eleventh-grade student. The course consists of reading and discussing novels, essays, short stories, plays and poetry by American authors. Communication skills, oral and written, are reinforced and developed. Composition skills will be stressed through numerous essays, projects and a research paper. Grammar and vocabulary, with an emphasis on the ACT, will be taught.

The goal of this course is to engage students to become skilled readers of prose written in a variety of contexts and to become skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. Students completing this course will be able to write effectively and confidently in their college courses across the curriculum and in their professional lives. We will emphasize the expository, analytical and argumentative writing and reading that forms the basis of academic and professional communication. Students will need to plan time in their schedule for a significant amount of reading and writing. The AP exam will be given in May.

This course provides the senior student with a background in British/World literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to the Twentieth century. The student should have a firm foundation in composition skills to facilitate analysis of various aspects of literature and to be able to write a comprehensive research paper. The students will also focus on vocabulary development and oral communication skills.

Speech is a prerequisite course required for most college majors. CCP Speech will offer Bloom-Carroll students the opportunity to earn college credit for this class (3 credit hours) on BC's campus. Students in this class will be held to a college-level standard for participation and effort. CCP Speech emphasizes the communication process and extemporaneous speaking skills through informative, demonstrative and persuasive speeches. The student learns to analyze audiences, choose and narrow topics, develop content through research, effectively use presentation aids, clearly organize speech material and successfully present speeches to a class audience.
