About the Course

Taster Day Task

Here is a short physical theatre task to give you a taste of Performing Arts at Blackpool Sixth!

Creation in Isolation!

Performing is tricky at the moment, due to lockdown restrictions, but that hasn't stopped our Actors! We are currently creating a physical theatre performance based on PUSH Physical Theatre's Chair Choreography.

Why don't you have a go with us?

Step One: Watch the YouTube clip!

Step Two: Get a chair or even sit on your sofa, create a short physical theatre chair phrase. Your choreography must include a minimum of 8 movements. The more creative the better! Don't be afraid to take risks and experiment.

Step Three: Now you have your movement, you need to consider your dramatic aim. What do you think your movement conveys to the audience? What is the purpose of your performance? Do you want to tell a specific story, present a theme or embody a particular emotion? You decide!

Here is an example from one of our students!

Step Four: Now you have decided on your dramatic aim, you can start to think about your characterisation. Think about how you can use your physical skills (posture, gestures, focus, dynamics, facial expressions) to create a character and get your dramatic aim across to your audience effectively!

Step Five: Now it is time to think about your aural setting - the sound that may accompany your performance. You should always pick sound that supports and enhances your dramatic aim. You could use music, sound effects such as a clock ticking or even silence.

CHALLENGE - Write a monologue that could accompany the movement or even be included as a voice over! The speech could be your characters inner thoughts and feelings or even telling the narrative that your physical theatre phrase has physically presented to the audience.

Step Six: Time to perform!

Video your performance, landscape (see image) and email them directly to me at olivia.hylins@blackpoolsixth.ac.uk ! I would love to see your work!

Our current Performing Arts students will soon be sharing their work on social media! Want to see how it turned out?
