About the Course

Taster Day Task

Task: Performer Analysis

Here is a short task for Musical Theatre, focusing on two well-regarded and established musical theatre performers.

Jeremy Jordan, performing 'She Used to Be Mine' from the musical 'Waitress'.

Renee Rapp, performing 'When Someone Gets Hurt' from the musical 'Mean Girls'.

Watch the performances below and choose one to focus on to answer the following question:

What makes this a successful musical theatre performance?

Think about the following in your answer:

  • What vocal skills are they demonstrating? Think about projection, pitching/accuracy, use of head voice / chest voice, belting, accent, diction

  • What performance skills are they demonstrating? Are they telling a story? How are they using their face and body to show a character? Do you believe it?

  • Do they make it look easy or challenging? Is the performance effortless?

Share your work with our teachers by emailing it to becky.brookes@blackpoolsixth.ac.uk and including 'Taster Day' in the subject of your email!

What you can do to prepare for studying Musical Theatre

Taster Day Vocal Warmups

Vocal Skills

In Musical Theatre, we use our voices as our primary tool for communication and expression. It is essential that we are able to control our voice and use it a safe and healthy manner.

Here you will see one of our teachers, Becky, demonstrating some vocal exercises you can use to warm up your voice and practice extending your vocal range

Have a go at these - see how far you can get!

Repertoire

Have you ever heard someone say, 'You can't sing that?! It's overdone!'

Finding repertoire that is appropriate for your voice and the performance context can be challenging for musical theatre performers, but it is what helps you to stand out from the crowd and show off your skills!

Here you will see a playlist of lesser-known musicals to listen to and add to your own repertoire of songs!

In Musical Theatre, we encourage students to create a playlist of their repertoire - what songs would be in your rep list?
