Broad-Based Engineering course at Salford University (female only)

What’s it all about?

The course is based around a group project undertaken in one of the engineering or science laboratories where the pupils build and analyse an engineering/science design and present it to their peers. In addition, the course also includes a one-day visit to an engineering/science company to witness real life projects and engage in interactive discussion sessions with Industry leaders.  The course is planned to give the participants positive real life examples of what it feels like to study and work in science and engineering related disciplines, expand participants’ knowledge and break down preconceptions of the careers available in these disciplines.  The course also gives young people the opportunity to experience life at university in a positive and supportive environment. The course is led by Professor Haifa Takruri, course leader and Professor at the University of Salford who was awarded an MBE in 2009 for her work in encouraging women and minorities into science and engineering.

What will I be doing?

The course will focus on Aeronautical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics. You will be given a choice according to your interest. You need to be studying Maths and Physics or equivalents.

Material Science course at The University of Cambridge

What’s it all about?

This course at the University of Cambridge is designed to give you an insight into Materials Science and a flavour of what life is like as an undergraduate here.  You’ll be based in Churchill College but attend lectures and carry out practical work at the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy.

What is it all about?

Materials Science is an interdisciplinary subject, which combines elements of physics, chemistry, engineering and even biology.  We study how the properties of a material are affected by its structure and the way it has been processed, and the subject has applications in every aspect of our daily lives, from computer chips to prosthetics and from buildings to clean energy.

Materials Science at Cambridge forms part of the Natural Sciences Tripos, which enables students to experience a wide range of subjects during their first two years of study. 

What will I be doing?

If you would like a challenging and intensive Insight into University course covering a range of Materials Science topics, then this is for you.

A good understanding of maths and science will enable you to appreciate all aspects of Materials Science. To study for a Natural Sciences degree at Cambridge University requires the highest academic grades and a passionate interest in science – this course reflects these requirements.

The Cambridge course is only available to students who attend non-selective state schools. One female place left remaining.

Who will be on this course? This will be a mixed course with 36 student places available.

Ryanair have recently developed the Ryanair Engineering Training Academy which offers multiple pathways into the Aviation industry for individuals who have little to no experience, such as college leavers.

 

As Ryanair grows its fleet to an impressive 800 aircraft, we are set to hire 1,000 trainees across out network in 2024 to ensure we have the manpower required to operate a large and successful operation.

Inspiring Minds: STEM

Inspiring Minds is Loughborough University’s series of taster days for Year 12 students. It’s an excellent opportunity to learn more about the options available to you at university. The events allow you to not only experience studying your chosen subject area at university level, but also to meet our current students and academics and discover more about university life!

At Inspiring Minds: STEM, attendees can choose up to four sessions from our STEM-related subjects and explore the campus through tours of our STEM departments.

You've probably seen a Boots on your local high street – the first store was opened in 1849! Perhaps you've been in-store or online and made a purchase, but what do you really know about this renowned retailer?

Come and join this unique opportunity to learn more about careers within the market leader in the world of healthcare, beauty and retail. Hear from members of the Boots team about the wealth of opportunities available in Healthcare, Retail, Supply Chain and STEM to name but a few. All whilst getting to interact in activities, independently and in groups with other young people from across the country who are interested in similar careers you are considering.

Session 4: 31st January – Careers in Retail (Including Beauty)

Session 5: 7th February – Careers in Supply Chain

Option 3 - ‘Behind the scenes’ Careers at Boots        

Session 6: 28th February – Careers in STEM (Including IT)

Session 7: 6th March – Careers at Boots Support office (including Marketing)

Session 8: 13th March – Discovering your next steps after work experience (mandatory)

All sessions take place on Wednesdays from 3.30pm - 5pm.

Previously 92% of those attending virtual work experience with Boots would now consider starting a career in the organisation and 93% felt the experience had useful to add to their CV, so this is an opportunity not to be missedWhilst completing your application, please rank your preference of the sessions you’d like to join, or if you plan to join all of them.

We encourage you to attend as many of these sessions as you would like to, but ask that you attend both the introductory (Session 1) and next steps sessions (Session 8) in addition to any of the other sessions you choose to join – You will be sent a workbook with pre and post activities to complete for each of the double sessions you attend which must be completed and submitted before the end of the work experience.

Goodbody is a full service, investment-led business offering wealth management, asset management and investment banking services. They have 3 amazing programmes with us including Wealth Management, Corporate Advisory: Investment Banking & Introduction to Stock Picking.

The latter two are part of our Investment Banking Career Path that you may have seen on the platform! That career path journey is a really great tool to share with any students considering that role in the future. These programmes range from Beginner to Advanced which are perfect to share with multiple cohorts of students!

For our Engineering specialists! Spectris provide high-tech instruments, test equipment and software for many of the world's most technically demanding industrial applications.

They have a great programme called Measurement Techniques for Sustainability which focuses on building technical skills such as calculations and technical research whilst also building up students' professional skills in presentations and writing.

What’s included?

Curious about what rail has to offer? This programme will help lay the foundations as you explore the rail industry and the wide variety of roles within it. You’ll learn more about the different careers available and gain a deeper insight into working in rail through a series of activities.

In this virtual work experience programme, you’ll explore the rail industry - from driving and engineering to data analytics and sustainability management. You’ll discover roles you may not have considered and the various ways to enter them. You’ll complete a series of quizzes and activities to help build your understanding of the industry, finishing the programme with a downloadable certificate.
