The Role
As an Instrumentation or Mechanical Technician you will spend your first year at a specialist training facility with our training provider Westinghouse Springfields Fuels. You will learn basic engineering and craft skills, giving you a great foundation to progress.
You will then join us on site in year two, based within our training team where you will undertake more formal in-house training for the next three years with our Engineering teams.
Here are a few examples of what our Instrumentation and Mechanical Technicians do:
Have a pro-active approach to safety, considering own safety and that of colleagues and visitors. Ensuring compliance with all site, local rules and procedures. Escalating any safety concerns that cant be resolved when found.
Carry out scheduled Preventative Maintenance routines inline with documented procedures to reduce potential for unplanned breakdowns of equipment.
Carry out Corrective Maintenance on equipment if it fails, minimising the impact on production where possible.
Have a pro-active approach to all works, planning and preparing for all preventative or corrective tasks to ensure, safety and quality standards are met.
Carry out or support root cause analysis of unplanned outages / fault diagnosis on equipment and identify and implement actions to prevent a reoccurrence where practical.
This Apprenticeship will give you an industry recognised qualification via a Level 3 in Maintenance and Operations Engineering (MOET), with many of our apprentice going on to additional study. Alongside this you will complete additional qualifications up to Level 4 standard.
This duration of this Apprenticeship Programme is 48 months and if successful, you will join our 2025 Apprenticeship Intake in September.

As part of this apprenticeship, you will learn how to maintain the equipment and facilities necessary to keep the market leading truck factory at peak condition. Cable jointing
This role will see successful candidates work primarily on the electrical underground cable network, installing and maintaining connections over a range of voltages to ensure that the electricity supply meets customer needs, and the network maintains our high standards. This role would involve connecting cables to the system as well as finding faults and repairing problems which may have developed through age or damage.
Overhead Linesperson
As an overhead linesperson you would be responsible for installing and repairing overhead lines to maintain power transmission, distribution and to ensure our customers electricity supply is available 24/7. You be a team player who enjoys working outdoors in a physical role. You will need to be comfortable working at heights, often in a rural environment.
Fitting
As a Fitter you will be working on equipment within substations over a range of voltages. This work is varied and includes carrying out preventative and reactive maintenance following faults and decommissioning of old equipment and commissioning of new equipment. You will be working on a diverse range of equipment including switchgear, transformers and auxiliary control and protection equipment all of which can vary from old mechanical, analogue equipment to new digital electronic equipment. Working as part of a small team across a range of locations, you’ll ensure that our electricity network meets our high standards by producing quality work, sometimes at heights or in confined spaces.
Blending academic and technical skills tuition with work-based learning, this programme will provide training on a variety of assets, from the latest technology to traditional kit, providing you with a varied and interesting career.
Health and Safety is our number one priority; from day one you’ll be taught the fundamentals enabling you to keep yourself and your colleagues safe. You’ll be introduced to your chosen trade, all within the safety of our first-class training centres in Cumbernauld and Hoylake. During your training, you’ll develop your technical knowledge and hands-on skills. Within your first year, you’ll be out in your local district being mentored by our experienced Craftspeople.
The role of a Planning & Design Trainee involves detailed technical discussions with customers, architects, public authorities and landowners together with a sound and pragmatic appreciation of complex engineering problems. Applicants must be personable and approachable, with a firm understanding of engineering and financial matters.
The training programme provides on-the-job training and formal courses held in one of our Training Centres at either Taunton or Tipton, over a period of approximately two years (depending on entry level qualifications). Successful candidates will also be expected to study for and achieve a higher-level qualification. The majority of the on-the-job training will take place within local teams, but you may be required to undertake placements at other locations across the National Grid service area, so you need to be flexible and able to travel.
You will be responsible for the design, costing and quoting of projects such as new electricity supplies, and the replacement, diversion & reinforcement of existing electricity network assets.
The apprenticeship programme takes around three years to complete, and you’ll spend your first 10 - 12 weeks being inducted onto the programme at one of our Training Centres. You’ll earn while you learn and develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours to become a Network Planner, a higher-level qualification (if not already achieved). Your Training will include vocational and academic courses along with periods of on-the-job training and development, learning from an experienced and qualified Network Planner. Following a formal assessment of your knowledge, skills and behaviours, you’ll become a qualified Network Planner yourself.
As you will be studying for a higher-level qualification, you will be required to undertake placements with your training provider for up to two weeks at a time during the first two years. Accommodation and travel costs will be provided.

The starting salary is £12000.00 per annum, rising to approximately £30,000.00 on completion and continues to rise through the company pay scales for technicians and ultimately Senior Engineer pay scales.
