Starting secondary school can be a daunting but exciting time. Take a look at our frequently asked questions below!
Students follow a 2 week timetable with different subjects taught by specialist teachers. Each lesson takes place in a different classroom, so students move around the school throughout the day.
Students are not always placed in tutor groups alongside their friends from primary school but you will be able to see them during break and lunchtimes. This new beginning is the perfect opportunity to start to make new friends too.
We have three colleges, Airy Fawcett and Sancho which are made up of our students tutor groups. The colleges are designed to support you and your academic progress throughout your time at LAB.
Your tutor is your first point of contact. Our college Student Service Managers (SSMs) are also available to support you.
There is always a wide variety of
food to buy at break and lunchtime.
If you prefer you can bring a packed
lunch. Year 7s get to sit together so
you can sit with your friends either
in the restaurant or outside on the
picnic tables. Your parents add
money to your account through the
school payment system and we scan
your thumbprint to pay for the food.
The work at secondary school is a continuation of what you have been learning in Year 6.
Some of the learning may recap what you have done and then you will move on to build new concepts and ideas as Year 7 progresses.
The teachers will plan your learning carefully, so it is both accessible and challenging.
LAB has a strict no phones policy. Students are allowed to bring their phones to school but they must be switched off and in your bag out of sight. If a student is seen with a phone, this will be confiscated and a parent/carer will be asked to collect.
Lots of after school clubs are on offer at LAB such as:
Reading Club
Maths Club
Music Club
Spanish Club
Sports Club
Debate Society
Please see Clubs and Societies tab for more information
Students go home early on a Wednesday so that staff members can take part in continuous professional development.
The building is designed along with our college system so your lessons take place on your college floor. There may be times you need to have science on the top floor or PE in the sports hall but there are plenty of members of staff and students who can point you in the right direction.
Take a look at our map which shows a basic floorplan of the Academy building!
