After years of working as a qualified human physiotherapist, Helen took a career break following the passing of her mother. During this time, she began volunteering with rescue dogs through the SPCA and Ellie’s Canine Rescue. While fostering, Helen noticed that many of the dogs in her care faced physical challenges—hip dysplasia, post-surgical recovery, or age-related mobility issues. With a physiotherapist’s eye, she wondered; could the same principles that help people heal, also support dogs?
That question sparked a new path. Helen trained formally as a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist (CCRT) through the Canine Rehabilitation Institute in the USA, joining a growing global movement in animal physiotherapy.
When local rehab services for animals closed, Helen and her husband Stu, stepped in to fill the gap. In October 2023, they launched Black Dog Physio—a dedicated, independent canine rehabilitation service, built to help animals regain strength, comfort, and mobility. What began as one physio’s journey has since grown into a team of passionate rehab professionals.
Black Dog Physio was founded with heart, purpose—and a black Labrador cross named Jess.
The last of her litter, Jess was adopted from the Wellington SPCA by Helen and her family. She arrived at just the right moment, bringing light and laughter to their home during the early days of parenthood. Over the years, Jess became more than a pet—she was a steady presence through life’s ups and downs, offering comfort in times of grief and joy in everyday moments.
Her quiet loyalty and unwavering love left a lasting imprint. When it came time to name a new venture that would blend Helen’s physiotherapy expertise with her deep love for animals, there was no better inspiration than Jess.
At the heart of Black Dog Physio is Jess—the black dog who quietly changed everything and continues to inspire a mission: helping dogs move better, feel better and live their very best lives.
