Good planning reflects the relationship between what is taught and how best to teach it.
All teachers are required to plan for the continuity and progression of the curriculum in accordance with the agreed planning formats. Clear guidance is provided to outline how planning is recorded, shared and kept.
All teachers’ planning should be available (through the agreed procedures), at the request of the leadership team. At both Primary campuses, the plans for Year 1 – 6 are put in planning folders on the year group shared drive. These should be completed before the beginning of the week they are due to be taught. EYFS plans are created on a daily basis according to children’s needs and interests.
At the British International School, Ho Chi Minh City we have three types of plans:
Long Term
Medium Term
Short Term
These give an overview of what will be taught over the whole academic year and divided to at least three terms. They show how the different subjects may be linked with cross curricular themes using the AREs, English NC and IPC.
Long term Plans for all Y1 to Y6 classes are published on the school website for parents to access.
Schemes of work give detail to Long Term Plans and enable each teacher to know and understand the pre-requisite skills, knowledge and understanding needed to deliver the curriculum at each stage. The schemes outline the key objectives / learning goals and provide a structure for continuity and progression.
English - Our Age Related Expectations (AREs), Talk for Writing scheme, Read Write Inc. scheme and NC Units guide this subject area.
Maths - The ARE documents outline long term planning for this area.
Science - A long term plan based on the English National Curriculum QCA Units of study is provided on the campus shared drive.
Other Subjects - The IPC provides units of work which give an overview of what needs to be learned and these are accessible on the IPC website:
www.internationalprimarycurriculum.com
These detail the content for the curricular areas and how they will be covered over the course of a term.
Primary class teachers are required to complete the medium term/half-termly curriculum planner for English, Maths, Science and IPC. This details the expected weekly content for these areas. When there is more than one teacher per year group or specialist department, these documents can be completed cooperatively.
Medium term plans should be saved on the year group curriculum shared drive for reference.
Early Years teachers develop their plans in accordance to the needs of the children. They plan on a daily basis using a child initiated approach. Early Years follow the guidance from the Early Years Curriculum. (see EYFS Planning Policy for more details)
These plans enable the teacher to detail what they will be teaching and how they are going to teach it. These are the teachers’ individual plans for each class and should include the differentiated activities, if necessary, for individual or groups of children and classroom management information, together with evaluation and continuation of previous work.
Copies of year group Medium Term Planning, and individual teacher’s Short Term Planning and timetable, should be readily available for reference on the Primary Year Group Shared Drive for ease of access and monitoring.
The Age Related Expectations developed by staff here at BIS HCMC form the basis for our planning, and give direction for the assessment of attainment and progress for each of our children from Year 1 to Year 9. AREs for Primary Year Groups can be found below:
