SAKAI INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL

INCOMING STUDENT/FAMILY INFORMATION

WELCOME TO SAKAI

At Sakai,,we value the unique model that our school offers focusing exclusively on the 5th and 6th grade years. These pre-teen years serve as a crucial bridge between the elementary and middle school experiences

Sakai students can expect to still receive the close guidance and nurturing that an elementary school brings, but are also "nudged" toward greater independence and self-advocacy, which are crucial skills for success in the upper grades.

At Sakai,,we understand that 10 to 12 year olds are searching for their own identities, discovering new skills and concrete ways to navigate their own challenges

At Sakai, 5th graders come together for the first time as a cohort, their graduating class. This is also a great time for a new student to enter our school district.  We begin building positive and productive friendships right away!

TEAM TEACHING

Teachers work in teams and students are assigned a homeroom teacher. Academic instruction is provided with the team model. This model helps students transition from elementary to middle school. Students receive the personalized attention they need, while also managing different subjects in different classrooms.  Students receive core instruction in Math, Science, Social Studies and Language Arts.

WHAT MAKES SAKAI SPECIAL?

Sakai is positive, nurturing, welcoming, and engaging for staff, students and parents.

Learning is joyful and rewarding, involving academics, social skill development, physical activity, artistic expression, and play.

Learning is a process that challenges students to think and perform independently and responsibly.

Sakai educators set high expectations for themselves and their students and believe that all students can be successful.

Fifth and sixth grade students are in a unique transition, and their learning should facilitate that change.

Students rotate through different specialist teachers in the following subjects:

Physical Education

Art

Music

Performance Band

MORNING BROADCAST

Every school day begins with a student-run broadcast that is shown in classrooms. Students run the show with anchoring, the weather, sports and a special daily feature. Students also run the teleprompter, mixer, soundboard, cameras and background.

STUDENT COUNCIL

Each homeroom elects a representative to be part of Sakai's students government.  The Student Council makes important decisions for all students and staff.

COHO TIME

A weekly 45-minute period where all students receive a common lesson centered on social emotional learning, positive community and team building

HIGHLY CAPABLE

We believe that every child in our district should be challenged and supported academically, emotionally and socially.  Learn more about what challenges we offer.

INTRAMURALS

Students can partake in class competition games during lunches.  This is a good time to build class camaraderie and practice good sportsmanship at Sakai.

SALMON RELEASE

Each year, students engage in a week-long unit on salmon and their environmental needs. We raise salmon in a tank in our school's entryway during late winter, and then release them in the stream behind the school.   Each student goes through the tradition of naming their fish and then releasing it into the creek that leads to the Puget Sound.
