No. Each team must have a teacher or other adult leader who registers the team. Teams are encouraged to have a student leader, however, an adult is required to register the team.
Yes, students attending any high school internationally can participate. International student teams must be affiliated with a school and have a teacher supervising the team.
It depends. Homeschooled high school students in the United States can join the BioBuilderClub as their own team. All international teams must be affiliated with a school and led by a teacher.
Small groups not affiliated with a high school can participate if they are in the United States and their high school does NOT have an existing BioBuilderClub team. If a student attends a high school with an existing BioBuilderClub team, they are not permitted to start a non-school-affiliated team outside of school.
Students from multiple schools may form a team together as long as they have supervision from a teacher, parent/guardian, or other adult. Students in multi-school groups may not attend a school that already has a school-affiliated BioBuilderClub team. Please reach out to chloe@biobuilder.org if you have questions about your specific situation.
We do not limit the number of teams a school can register; however, we can only support two teams at no cost for each Title I school.
Registration may be canceled up to 10/15/2026. In such cases, a refund of registration fees will be issued, less any incurred payment processing fees. We are unable to refund registration fees for cancellations received after 10/15/2026.
No. Students do not need to register at all for the team to register. Please register the team as soon as possible and have students join later. If the team has roster changes during the season, please contact the program coordinator for assistance. There is no deadline for student registration as long as the team is registered by the team registration deadline.
No. Please do not include students on the team registration. A registration confirmation email will be sent to the email provided during registration with a link to forward to students. Students may register to the team beginning 24 hours after the team registers. There is no deadline for student registration as long as the team is registered by the team registration deadline.
No. Teams are free to start at any time; however, the season kickoff will not be until October. There will be limited programming before October. We recommend that returning teams planning to build or test their designs get started as soon as possible. We also recommend that students begin familiarizing themselves with synbio by reading the BioBuilder textbook once they register and receive the link.
Teams should still register as soon as possible because space may be limited. As long as an adult registers the team on time, students can join later and the team can get started on their own schedule.
