Poorer communities have always been disproportionately affected by tuberculosis. In 2018, Queens had the highest number of tuberculosis cases among the city. The highest concentration of cases were in Elmhurst, Corona, and Jackson Heights.
These three cities are all adjacent with each other, with Jackson Heights and North Corona (school District 3) being 20% Asian, and Elmhurst and South Corona (school District 4) being 32% Asian. In District 3, 59.2% of the residents are foreign-born (23% of those foreign-born being from Asia), and in District 4, 63.8% of the residents are foreign-born (42% of those foreign-born being from Asia).
While both districts have a higher percentage of Hispanic people in their populations as well as a higher percentage of their foreign-born residents being from Latin America, Asians (foreign-born or not) come second and are still a notable part of those populations.
