Undergraduate Biology Education Team's Manuscript on Research Poster Presentation Training Accepted for Publication in ASM JMBE!

Our work on training undergraduates for poster conversations which was presented last summer at ConnectUR by Meghan Dillon and Julia Gerstman has been published at ASM JMBE! Additional co-authors include Allie Scarcella, Meghan Mantz, and Courtney Kleeschulte!

Light Lab and Biofilm REU Members Present Posters and Oral Presentations - 3 AWARD winners!

REU students Sam Cimbora, Katherine Peters, and Jan Ashley Masse received presentation awards for their oral (Sam) and poster (Katherine, Jan) presentations at the 2023 meeting of the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Scientists in Phoenix, AZ! Other REU team members Grace McKissock and Jackson Nguyen and FRI students Caspar Carson and Tevin Flom also presented posters at the meeting!

Undergraduate Student Team Accepted for 20min Oral Presentation at the Coucil for Undergraduate Research's ConnectUR Meeting in Summer 2023 in Pittsburgh, PA

Current Light Lab students Meghan Dillon, Julia Gerstman, Allie Scarcella, and Meghan Mantz will be presented their research on the student outcomes from a novel improvisation activity implemented in the First-year Research Immersion program to better prepare undergraduate researchers to present their work at a poster session. This is the first oral presentation for undergraduates from the Light lab and this work is in preparation for submission to ASM JMBE this fall. Way to go team!

Undergraduate Student Team Accepted for Poster Presentation at ASM Biofilms Meeting in Fall 2022 in Charlotte, NC

Current Light Lab students Allie Scarcella, Joe Zuccalmaglio, Steph Henske, and Cat Bibby recently had their abstract accepted for presentation at the American Society for Microbiology's meeting on biofilms this fall. The team will present their work on the role of outer membrane vesicles in biofilm dispersion.

Second Peer Reviewed Publication with Undergraduate Student Author and Writing Award

Former FRI student Sonia Hills published as first-author on a biology education research project to create and assess better training programs for responsible and ethical conduct of research in course-based undergraduate research experiences. This publication can be found in the American Society of Microbiology's journal JMBE. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1128/jmbe.00024-22. This is now the second paper from the Light Lab with an undergraduate first author! Additionally, Sonia and Abby, both Light Lab first authors were awarded the Alex and Betty Shrift Award, which is a Harpur College award for excellence in scientific writing. This award was established in memory of Professor Shrift, who taught at Binghamton University from 1966 until his death in 1992 and is presented to a graduating senior who has demonstrated excellence in scientific writing.



Peer Reviewed Publication with FRI Biofilms Undergraduate Student Author

Former FRI student Abby Radin published as first-author on an innovative teaching approach developed during COVID-19 to train students in science communication using social media. This publication can be found in the American Society of Microbiology's journal JMBE. This is the first paper from the Light Lab with an undergraduate first author! DOI: 10.1128/jmbe.00236-21

Peer Reviewed Publication with FRI Biofilms Undergraduate Student Authors

FRI students Avery Lieber and Michelle Terry have been named as authors on recent a research publication in the American Society of Microbiology's journal mSphere. This is the first paper from the Light Lab that included FRI student authors. This work was done in collaboration with the Schertzer Lab at Binghamton University. DOI:10.1128/mSphere.01109-20

Student Presentation Award 2019 ABRCMS Meeting

FRI student Avery Lieber, and his teammate Michelle Terry were awarded a 2019 ABRCMS Student Poster Presentation award for their work on  Pseudomonas Quinolone Signal, Outer Membrane Vesicles, and Cyclic di-Guanosine Monophosphate in Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm development from FRI, independent study, and Binghamton University Summer Scholars research projects.

Student Presentations at 2019 ABRCMS Meeting

SRI student Maria De Leon was selected to present her work at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students  (ABRCMS) in Anaheim, California this November. She along with former FRI students  Michelle Terry, Avery Lieber, and Madison Gowett will also be presenting their work from their 2019 summer research experiences.

Partnership with microBELLA Cosmetics 

Students from SRI 2019 in the Light Lab and Independent Study students for Fall 2019 are working with microBELLA Cosmetics founder Kathryn Cherny to investigate the impacts of cosmetic  products on commensal skin microorganisms and overall skin microbiome health.
